UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UMBWMC) is part of the University of Maryland Medical System. We are a designated ANCC Pathway to Excellence hospital with a busy emergency department and a team focused on high-quality care and service. Our facility has 285 licensed beds, 3,200 employees, and over 800 physicians, with strong affiliations to University of Maryland Medical Center in downtown Baltimore.
Job requirements include day shift hours: , OR , and this role is the minimum position for nurses with greater than 12 months of experience who will participate in unit governance and provide comprehensive, patient-centered care within a clinical specialty.
ResponsibilitiesThe nurse independently provides and coordinates care, participates as a full member of the multidisciplinary team, models professional nursing practice, and works to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction, and cost effectiveness at the unit level. The role involves collaboration with patients, families, and colleagues to deliver holistic care and is accountable to peers and to the nurse manager for performance and adherence to Nursing Mission, Vision and Values.
QualificationsMinimum Education Requirements
- An Associate Degree in Nursing is required;
Bachelor of Science from a College of Nursing is preferred. - Current Maryland RN licensure is required prior to beginning orientation.
- At least 1 year of operating room RN experience is required.
- Professional Certification is highly encouraged.
- Employees hired on or after July 1, 2018 will be required to complete a Bachelor of Science from a College of Nursing within 5 years from the date of hire or transfer into a Clinical Nursing position.
- If there is a gap in applied nursing experience of 5 years or more, successful completion of a refresher course within the past 6 months is required.
Additional Qualifications
- American Heart Association (AHA) BLS required upon hire
- Must meet all unit-specific certification requirements: PALS, ACLS, NRP
- Maintains all Clinical Nurse I core expectations
- Competent evaluation with successful passing of probation; current on all mandatory classes/training
- Ability to learn and use computer systems to manage patient information
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Professional Practice
- Independently practices with solid knowledge and clinical skills
- Competent in care of unit-specific patient population and functions
- Utilizes and integrates evidence into practice
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care
- Transitions from task-based care to holistic care
- Participates in unit-based Clinical Practice activities
- Integrates patient education materials using Teach Back methodology
Practice Focus Areas
- Assists in developing clinical practice guidelines and standards for the unit
- Serves as Clinical Resource for others
- Engaged in advancing own practice and contributes to ancillary personnel skills
- Participates in unit-based Professional Development activities
- Contributes to unit-based education and learning activities (e.g., posters, in-services)
- Completes a minimum of ten CE hours annually or six credit hours toward a BSN or Master’s degree
- Member of professional organizations; serves as super-user or SME
- Participates in community service programs and achieves professional certification
- Obtains a BS from a College of Nursing
- Demonstrates knowledge of NSQI, National Hospital Quality Measures, National Patient Safety Goals, and HCAHPS
- Participates in unit-based PI efforts and supports action plan implementation
- Participates in research elements and regulatory readiness
- Models professional behavior and a culture of excellence
- Delegates appropriately; supports teamwork and participates in unit/hospital committees
- Promotes Healthy Work Environment guidelines
- Assists with unit operations, equipment, scheduling, and peer review processes
Ensures patient safety in job performance and participates in hospital and unit safety initiatives. Actions include correcting observed risks, reporting adverse events, implementing policies, and maintaining effective team communication.
Working Conditions- Weekend, shift work, holidays, on-call, and overtime may be required
- Physical requirements:
up to 50 lbs lifting with patient handling; continuous standing, walking, and bending - Ability to work in environments with potential exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials; standard precautions apply
- Possible floating to similar units based on acuity and census
- May work rotating shifts and participate in temporary assignments for staffing
- Annual respirator mask fitting may be required
