The University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC) is seeking highly motivated Nurse Practitioner Residents to join our Critical Care Residency Program for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). This is a one-year, post-graduate training program designed to prepare APPs for advanced practice in critical care medicine through structured education, simulation-based learning, and supervised clinical experience.
Program OverviewThe Critical Care APP Residency Program provides immersive training across medical and surgical intensive care units, combining hands‑on clinical practice with didactic education and simulation training. Residents will gain experience managing critically ill patients with complex, multi‑organ failure across a wide range of specialties.
Key Learning ExperiencesResidents will develop progressive competence in critical care medicine through:
- Direct patient care in medical and surgical ICUs
- Participation in daily rounds, admissions, and patient management
- Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests and imaging
- Performing bedside procedures under supervision
- Exposure to interventional services including pulmonology, cardiology, and radiology
- Training in ultrasound techniques and point‑of‑care diagnostics
- Participation in simulation‑based education using high‑fidelity mannequins
- Structured learning in critical care billing, documentation, and evidence‑based practice
- Intubation
- Central and arterial line placement (ultrasound‑guided)
- Thoracentesis and chest tube placement
- Paracentesis
- Lumbar puncture
- Bronchoscopy
- Bedside tracheostomy
- Full‑time, 12‑month structured residency program
- Direct mentorship from experienced APPs and critical care physicians
- Protected educational time with formal lectures, simulations, and conferences
- Exposure to FCCS and ENLS courses
- Participation in grand rounds, morbidity & mortality conferences, journal clubs, and radiology interpretation sessions
- Required evidence‑based scholarly project with opportunity for presentation or publication
- Fast‑paced, high‑acuity clinical environment
- 5-6 days per week including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Participation in all clinical and educational sessions required
- Progressive increase in clinical independence under supervision
