- Under minimal supervision, operate, repair, and maintain motor vehicles, grounds equipment and related-type equipment.
- Diagnose problems in gas and diesel equipment.
- Perform engine overhauls, drive train repairs, clutch repair, electrical repair, air conditioning repair, and minor body work on College-owned vehicles.
- Perform monthly preventive maintenance on all College-owned vehicles, and daily maintenance on fleet vehicles.
- Perform welding on College-owned equipment as needed.
- Work with snow removal crews during winter months.
- Keep tools, equipment and area clean and organized; wash, wax and vacuum vehicles; set up appointments for quotes and service for outside repairs.
- Operate computer system for maintenance history of all vehicles.
- Provide quarterly updates on vehicle conditions of all College-owned vehicles.
- Train drivers for department vehicles.
- Order supplies and parts for vehicles. Maintain a complete inventory of all vehicle supplies and tools.
- Daily creation and completion of work orders and time reports.
- Report to work during emergency conditions and may be assigned to report at a different time and location and to perform different duties as necessary.
- Annually responsible for documented hours of continuous learning towards current standards of ASE Certification.
- Perform work safely in accordance with department safety procedures and the College of DuPage safety program. Operate equipment safely and report any unsafe work condition or practice to supervisor.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Education
- Completion of high school required.
- Certified Mechanic Certificate required.
- Two year college education preferred.
- Experience
- Three to five years experience as an automotive mechanic, journeyman or graduate of approved auto tech program required.
- A.S.E. Certification required.
- Minimally proficient in spoken English required.
- Five to seven years experience as an automotive mechanic or Fleet Supervisor preferred.

Knowledge and ability to use hand tools, ignition tune-up machines, welding machines, and all tools relating to auto repair. Small ladders or step stools used regularly. Required to be scheduled on call to aid in snow emergencies. Must be able to lift 50+ pounds. Must be able to bend, reach, work on hands and knees as necessary. Uniform appearance must be clean and in good wear.
Must wear solid soled shoes. Usually good conditions, but could be exposed to harsh weather and long hours in emergency situations. Position requires extensive walking and the ability to climb stairs and ladders. Required uniforms supplied by the College of DuPage. Must pass physical exam at College expense. This position requires a background check, physical and drug screen.
Starting salary beginning at $22.63/hour. Competitive starting pay is dependent on education and experience.
