The Capital Project Engineer is responsible for developing, coordinating, and executing capital projects that improve safety, efficiency, quality, and overall plant performance. This role identifies operational improvement opportunities and translates them into well-defined capital initiatives.
The Project Engineer leads projects from concept through implementation, ensuring alignment with business goals, budget requirements, and regulatory standards. This is a hands-on role working cross-functionally with operations, maintenance, quality, and external vendors.
Key Responsibilities
Manage capital projects from concept through installation and startup
Develop project scopes, schedules, and budgets
Track capital spending and ensure budget adherence
Supervise equipment installation and project execution
Research, evaluate, and recommend machinery and systems
Coordinate vendors and internal teams to meet project timelines
Partner with marketing and commercialization on product and process needs
Collaborate with purchasing and supply chain on packaging and equipment requirements
Train employees on new processes and systems
Gather and validate technical project data (dimensions, utilities, pricing, etc.)
Work with fabrication shops, controls engineers, and production leadership
Update and maintain engineering drawings and documentation
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field preferred
4+ years of experience in capital projects, continuous improvement, or design engineering
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and Microsoft Office
Experience working with ERP systems
Knowledge of food processing equipment and plant systems
Familiarity with meat processing, bakery systems, weighing, refrigeration, and conveyors preferred
Understanding of material handling, pumps, extruders, and heat exchange/boiler systems
Basic knowledge of food manufacturing and GMP environments
Strong organizational and multitasking skills
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
Financial and budget management skills
Competitive salary range: $90,000 – $130,000
