The Role

Depending on area of assignment:
The Senior Accountant performs professional level staff work in one or more functional areas within the accounting division. Performs treasury function for City.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field and three years of accounting experience.

Salary
  • FLSA Exempt, and will be paid a salary regardless of hours worked per week.
  • A Grade 411 with an annual salary between $80,544.00 - $.

Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Leave

Regular status positions offer:

  • 10.5 paid holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays.
  • Vacation leave accrues at 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours/17.25 days per year). Increases to 6.12 hours per pay period after 5 years. Then caps out at 7.6 hours per pay period after 10 years of service.
  • Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours/14.25 days per year).

* Days per year estimates are based on an 8-hour work day.

Retirement

This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).

  • Contribution is mandatory, and deducted every pay period.
  • The current contribution rate is 12.00%.
General Responsibilities
  • Maintains general and subsidiary ledgers, and registers and submits special, periodic, and fiscal financial reports.
  • Prepares and maintains various documents relating to city grants and grant accounting to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Maintains accurate records of all city transactions.
  • Prepares journal entries.
  • Prepares special project analysis of other related accounting and administrative work as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Budget and Finance Department Assignment
  • Reconciles and analyzes General Ledger, account for governmental enterprise and minor grant funds.
  • Maintains complete cost accounting and accrual records, and prepares and submits monthly analysis of expenditures and revenues.
  • Prepares audit work papers and close-out for the fiscal year, and prepares oral or written answers to audit questions for the annual independent audit; and assists independent auditors in locating documentation to support financial records.
  • Prepares notes and financial statements for the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
  • Prepares and maintains various documents relating to city grants and grant accounting to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Reconciles cash from the various funds.
  • Manages the city’s daily cash flow.
  • Interprets and implements city’s investment policy. Works with city’s outside investment advisor and bank. Conducts authorized investment transactions on behalf of the city.
  • Prepares schedules for bond payments.
  • Prepares and files monthly tax reports, including employer taxes, sales tax, and excise fuel tax.
  • Answers questions from other departments and the general public regarding financial issues.
  • Prepares election financial reports.
  • May provide training to Accountant as required.
  • Works with outside agencies (bond rating agencies, bond counsel, D.E.Q. Wastewater Revolving Fund, financial advisors) to provide assistance and timely, accurate information.
  • Represents city’s financial interests in SROG-91st Avenue.
  • City Court Assignment
  • Prepares audit work papers and close-out for the fiscal year.
  • Prepares oral or written answers to audit questions for the annual independent audit; and assists independent auditors in locating documentation to support financial records for the Annual Independent Audit, Triennial City Audit, and the 7-Year State Audit.
  • Reconciles and analyzes court-related General Ledger account.
  • Prepares month-end Financial and Annual Reports for Court Management, City Finance, and the Administrative Office of the Courts.
