The Role

The Public Service Assistant performs a variety of technical and clerical library customer service duties at the circulation desk related to such activities as circulation, collecting fines, and assisting patrons in person and over the telephone. This is an entry-level classification.

The ideal candidate will have one year of customer service and library work experience.

Salary
  • FLSA non-exempt, and will earn overtime for any hours worked over 40 in a week.
  • Has pay rate of $16.89 - $25.34 per hour.
  • Scheduled to work 20 hours per week.

Responsibilities
  • Provides stellar customer service to library patrons and the community.
  • Checks library materials in and out; evaluates condition of materials returned; sensitizes and desensitizes materials.
  • Registers patrons and updates registration information using on-line circulation system.
  • Verifies residency status and maintains records of library cardholders.
  • Explains and enforces library policies with patrons.
  • Collects and adjusts fees for lost or damaged materials.
  • Assists patrons in person, on the telephone, or through email regarding library information, library materials or services, and refers them to the appropriate sources of information.
  • Participates in the training and monitoring of library volunteer staff in work related to circulation.
  • Assists patrons with the library’s print management system, basic computer assistance including: software/hardware, public Wi-Fi network, and library e-resources.
  • Provides general and department specific information to the public and to city employees.
  • Orients patrons to the library by informing them of services and programs available and the location of materials.
  • Locates, pulls, and processes library materials requested by library patrons.
  • Assists patrons with locating books and other materials or use of library equipment.
  • Responds to telephone inquiries.
  • Collects fees and processes lost book payments.
  • Processes damaged items and prepares associated bills.
  • Searches shelves for items claimed returned.
  • Shelves library materials according to Shelving Guideline Standards.
  • Handles donations and withdrawn library materials for Book Sale usage.
  • Assists with circulation maintenance of materials including but not limited to mending, statistics, cleaning, and restocking of supplies.
  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

One year of customer service and library work experience.

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.

  • Clean and monitor computer equipment such as headphones, mice, batteries, etc.
  • Monitor computer usage
  • Troubleshoot minor hardware and software problems
  • Monitor various printer supplies
  • Assist in the configuration of basic types of computer hardware and peripherals
  • Assist with inventory of computer equipment and software
