Summary: Under direct supervision, the incumbent provides assistance to teachers by preparing materials, supporting students individually or in groups on special projects, demonstrating skills, communicating with parents, contributing to lesson plans, photocopying materials, and preparing classrooms. The incumbent also monitors students on the playground and cafeteria.

Essential Functions:

• Works with students individually or in groups on special projects or assignments, including spelling, reading, mathematics, comprehension levels, and memorization of emergency information. Demonstrates skills and techniques to aid in student learning. Monitors student behavior and enforces school and classroom standards and policies.
• Monitors students and ensures safety on the playground and cafeteria before school, during breakfast and lunch, and during recess. Reports incidents to school administration and escorts students to other areas.
• Maintains discipline by monitoring behavior and determining appropriate actions, including warnings or formal notices, and prepares incident documents. Monitors student progress in reading and mathematics.
• Copies and prepares educational materials as needed.
• Prepares classrooms for activities, sets up furniture, hands out materials, and cleans up after activities.
• Communicates with parents regarding progress and concerns, including academic improvements, truancy, and behavioral problems.
• Assists teachers in planning and coordinating lesson plans by sharing ideas and providing feedback.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

To be eligible:

• High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to hiring, completion of 60 college credit hours, Associate’s Degree, or successful completion of Arizona State approved paraprofessional test.
• Six months of experience working with children in a learning environment.
• For Non-Title 1 Schools (LM and AL):
• High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to hiring.
• Must receive CPR certification within thirty days of hire.
