San Miguel Catholic High School is seeking a highly motivated and qualified teacher to serve as a Substitute Teacher on an as-needed basis.

Job Description

As a full-time Permanent Substitute, you will be responsible for a long-term maximum assignment of five total courses along with a typical array of other professional duties (e.g. campus supervision, study hall supervision). Your instructional assignment of five courses falls within one subject area and normally includes a maximum of two preparations. The subject area depends on a combination of availability and content area expertise.

You may also elect to participate in extracurricular student activities, sports, and clubs.

You will work alongside a talented team of dedicated and high-competency colleagues charged with ensuring that every student meets or exceeds the expectations for academic success and personal growth in content knowledge, language skills, cognitive learning skills, and general academic behaviors. Along with your colleague instructors, you will participate in a variety of collegial programs intended to serve your professional and ministerial growth needs.

Requirements

Core Competencies

  • Instructional planning and preparation
  • Knowledge of content and skills relevant to the assignment field of academic study.
  • Pedagogical knowledge in instructional practice at the secondary level.
  • Ability to adapt and implement curriculum materials and lesson plans already available.

Learning Environment

  • Ability to conduct relationships with teenage students and their families in a multicultural and multireligious environment of respect and rapport.
  • Ability to motivate student interest and action in the assigned field of academic study.
  • Ability to manage norms for student conduct.

Instructional Practice

  • Ability to lead student learning in a classroom setting in accord with best practices in instruction at the secondary level.
  • Ability to administer a variety of assessment methods and techniques to determine student mastery of content and skills and to provide feedback to students about their progress.
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and adaptivity in instructional practice in response to student learning needs and environmental conditions.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Strong communication habits across a variety of media and in a variety of interpersonal settings (e.g. colleagues, students, parents).
  • Ability to integrate into a collegial community of teaching and learning experts.
  • Ability to conduct oneself as a person of integrity, ethical conduct, service to and advocacy for the changing needs of young people and their families.

Qualifications

Preferred

  • Five years of instructional experience at the secondary level.
  • Three years of experience working with young people and families of under-resourced communities.
  • Cultural knowledge of indigenous and Latino communities in Arizona.
  • Earned (or working towards) certification in secondary instruction.
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish.

Base

  • Three years of experience in classroom instruction at the secondary level.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in secondary education, psychology, a related field or specific academic content area.
