Pendergast Elementary School District, Desert Mirage School – Glendale, Arizona

Starting Date: Immediately

Job Description

The position of Art Teacher involves developing in children an interest in and the ability to express themselves creatively in visual terms, utilizing artistic skills and techniques appropriate to their interests and appreciation. The teacher also aids in aesthetic understanding, coordinates with and supervises other teachers, and supports talent development in the field of art.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree with major or minor in art
  • Arizona Teaching Certificate
  • At least two years of successful teaching experience, with a minimum of one year in art education

Such alternatives to the above required qualifications may be considered by the Superintendent/Designee.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach visual arts, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, ceramics, and related activities, following the approved curriculum.
  • Recommend instructional techniques to assist pupils with the development of aesthetic concepts and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
  • Demonstrate techniques in drawing, painting, modeling, and other common visual arts activities to other teachers and pupils.
  • Plan instructional plans and organize class time to provide a balanced program, including art as a separate study and integrated into interdisciplinary units.
  • Provide individual and small‑group instruction to meet the varying intellectual and artistic abilities of students.
  • Instruct others on proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Manage storage area and control use of materials and tools to prevent loss or abuse and to minimize distribution and collection time.
  • Select and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, and instructional aids, maintaining required inventory records.
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions showcasing student work for the school and community. May sponsor exhibits from external sources.
  • Organize and conduct in‑service training for teachers to improve classroom competency in presenting art activities.
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in conferences, seminars, workshops, or other professional growth activities.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs at the school or district level.
  • Serve on faculty committees and sponsor student activities, including bringing visiting artists into the school.
  • Promote activities that bring visiting artists into the school for students and teachers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent/Designee.
Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated according to the Board’s policies and evaluation of professional personnel.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret educational materials and programs; write reports, procedure manuals, and correspondence; effectively present information and respond to questions from teachers, students, administration, and the community.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations, and to work with probability and statistical inference.

Physical Demands

The role requires frequent talking and hearing; standing, walking, sitting, using hands to handle or feel objects, reaching with hands and arms, occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; and occasional lifting or moving up to 25 pounds.
