** STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
** Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being.

In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

Responsibilities:
• The incumbent will serve in a supportive capacity to a certified classroom teacher within the special education program.  
• With teacher assistance, prepares lesson plans, including objectives, methods and materials used in reviewing concepts which have been introduced by the teacher as well as reinforcing previously learned concepts. Prepares lesson plans independently without teacher assistance when necessary.  
• Assists certified education staff/teachers with all phases of the program. This may involve student hygiene; help with personal tasks such as bathroom, washing, grooming, walking, emotional nurture, recreational activities, field trips and handling all outworking that often occur among children with special needs.  
• Acting in a supportive capacity, instructs small groups or individual students who are experiencing learning and/or language difficulties. Instruction is based on a variety of sound educational methods developed and supervised by the teacher.  
• Provides one-on-one tutoring/instruction for eligible student(s) as a special services Education Technician according to the setting and organizational structure of the school. Student may experience learning challenges, language difficulties, physical limitations, and/or behavioral issues. Individualized sessions may include accommodations to classroom environment and modifications for teaching methods and/or course material.  
• May be called upon to work in regular classroom settings in carrying out the inclusion effort of the special education program.
