Position: Commissioning Engineer II (Mechanical)

Mechanical Commissioning Engineer L2

The Mechanical Commissioning Engineer L2 is responsible for Level 3, 4 and 5 commissioning of base building systems and components of a Data Center environment. This role will oversee, document, and track various aspects of commissioning activities including testing and validation of connectivity, life safety, chillers, water loops, cooling distribution equipment, pumps, control valves, split units, humidifiers, sequence of operations, and building management and automation systems.

The role supports construction/commissioning activities which may include nights and/or weekends.

This role may require an estimated 30%–50% travel to other sites around the U.S.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in all site construction activity and installations, in coordination with QTS Development Team and external resources, ensuring system design, installation, and testing meet operational standards.
  • Carry out comprehensive commissioning activities, ensuring all systems are installed, tested, and validated per industry standards and client specifications.
  • Monitor issues during commissioning, working closely with the project team to resolve technical challenges and provide feedback to program management for continuous improvement.
  • Create or review detailed commissioning documentation, including test procedures, reports, and as‑built documentation, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Witness testing of all equipment during commissioning to validate sequence of operations and receipt of all operational documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—design engineers, project managers, contractors, commissioning agents, and facilities operations—to ensure seamless integration of systems during commissioning without impacting operational campus sections.
  • Implement quality control measures to meet the highest standards during build and commissioning, complying with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Mentor junior Commissioning Engineers to develop the team.
Basic Qualifications
  • Three to seven years of technical, military, or equivalent workplace training.
  • Extensive background in building maintenance, fire detection/suppression systems, mechanical cooling systems, and building management systems (BMS).
  • Ability to travel to other Data Center locations as required.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in data center engineering, commissioning, project management, or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical systems used in a data center environment.
  • Previous work developing and reviewing commissioning documentation.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Ability to analyze system operations, identify problems, and implement corrective action.
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical systems used in a data center.
  • Ability to acquire and apply job‑related knowledge within guidelines and expectations.
  • Ability to develop solutions and technical plans for projects.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Team‑oriented mindset.
  • Computer skills, including MS Office, Outlook, and web‑based applications.
  • Physical capability for frequent typing, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 lbs, with heavier lifts performed with assistance or aids.
