Position Summary

The Adolescent Family Therapist provides family therapy services within Horizon Recovery's Residential Treatment Center (RTC), engaging parents and guardians as active participants in the treatment process. This role facilitates individual and group family therapy sessions, delivers parent education and coaching, and collaborates across the interdisciplinary treatment team to ensure treatment goals are integrated and sustained through discharge. The Family Therapist maintains timely clinical documentation, contributes to treatment and discharge planning, and upholds trauma-informed, ethically grounded standards of care in every aspect of clinical practice.

ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS Essential Functions
1. Family Therapy and Clinical Services
  • Provide individual and conjoint family therapy sessions to adolescents and their families within the RTC level of care.
  • Facilitate family therapy sessions with and without clients present, adjusting approach based on clinical need.
  • Provide parent education, coaching, and support to strengthen family functioning and sustain treatment engagement.
  • Facilitate parent support groups and family-focused therapeutic programming as assigned.
  • Apply family systems, trauma-informed, and evidence-aligned approaches in all clinical interactions.
2. Treatment Planning and Collaboration
  • Collaborate with parents, guardians, and interdisciplinary treatment team members to develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings, case consultations, and clinical reviews.
  • Partner closely with the Clinical Director, House Individual Therapist, Care Coordinators, Psychiatric Providers, and Behavioral Health staff to ensure integrated care across all domains.
  • Assist with discharge planning and transition planning to lower levels of care, coordinating with families and external providers as appropriate.
  • Communicate significant clinical concerns, safety risks, and treatment barriers to Clinical Leadership promptly.
3. Documentation and Compliance
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and thorough clinical documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR) in accordance with organizational, payer, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support treatment plan development, treatment plan reviews, and discharge planning documentation processes.
  • Use professional, objective language that supports continuity across clinical and operational teams.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality consistent with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and Horizon Recovery standards.
4. Collaboration and Team Integration
  • Collaborate daily with Therapists, House Supervisors, Nurses, Care Coordinators, and Education Coordinators to align family treatment goals with daily clinical practice.
  • Respond appropriately and without delay to urgent family, client, or treatment-related concerns.
  • Contribute positively to the clinical team culture by modeling professionalism, accountability, and trauma-informed engagement.
  • Comply with all Horizon Recovery policies, procedures, and clinical standards.

AUTHORITY Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This role has no direct supervisory authority over staff.
  • The Adolescent Family Therapist operates independently within the clinical scope of their license, under the direction of the Clinical Director, and exercises clinical judgment within established treatment protocols.
  • Expected to take initiative in identifying family engagement barriers and escalating concerns through the appropriate clinical chain without prompting.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of family systems theory and evidence-based family therapy modalities; ability to apply these frameworks within conjoint and individual family sessions in a residential treatment context.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles and adolescent behavioral health treatment; ability to adapt clinical approach to the developmental needs and emotional presentation of the adolescent population served.
  • Skill in facilitating parent education and support groups; ability to engage caregivers who are in varying states of readiness, crisis, or resistance with consistency and clinical grounding.
  • Skill in multidisciplinary team collaboration; ability to align family treatment goals with the broader treatment plan across clinical, nursing, psychiatric, and operational staff.
  • Skill in de-escalation and crisis recognition; ability to identify elevated family or client risk and communicate concerns to Clinical Leadership without delay.
  • Ability to maintain timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation in an EMR system under regulatory and payer standards, including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 requirements.
