Description
Temporary Library Security Guard provides security for City facilities, enforces rules and regulations, and answers questions for the public.
Position Overview- Part‑time: 19+ hours per week, scheduled as needed
- Hourly rate: $18.00 – $19.00
- FLSA status:
Non‑exempt (eligible for overtime pay for hours worked over 40 per week) - Work locations: 2 positions at the Main Library, 1 position at the Velma Teague Library, and 1 position at Foothills Library
- Sick time: accrues at .034 hours per hour‑paid
- Provide security for the city library locations and enforce rules and regulations.
- Assist library staff in maintaining a safe and secure environment for services to the public and in protecting library materials and property.
- Enforce established rules and regulations and answer basic directional and information questions asked by the public.
- Patrol the library, parking areas, and grounds in designated areas to observe and act on unusual behavior and to prevent vandalism.
- Observe activities at assigned locations and notify the Police Department of any emergencies or suspicious activities.
- Investigate and resolve customer security‑related complaints.
- Operate portable radio and/or phone to maintain contact with library staff.
- Record and report deficiencies related to the facilities assigned, such as safety hazards and security lighting.
- Receive and investigate security‑related complaints.
- Analyze and react to emergency situations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Two years of experience as a security officer or police officer.
Knowledge Of- Security practices
- Electronic security alarms and systems
- Analyzing and reacting to emergency situations
- Handle encounters with irate or hostile individuals
- Identify hazardous or unsafe conditions or behaviors
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the public
- Effectively communicate orally and in writing
- May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- This position is classified as safety‑sensitive, requiring candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. Candidates will be subject to further testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post‑offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.
