The Role

Water Services System Technician — Wastewater Collections performs skilled and semi‑skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work for the Water Services Department.

Duties include operating light to heavy equipment such as a 3‑ton utility truck, backhoe, combination jetter, vacuum truck, dump truck, utility crane truck, hydro‑excavation equipment, and closed‑circuit televising truck.

Salary
  • FLSA non‑exempt; overtime earned for hours over 40 per week.
  • A Grade 312 with an hourly salary between $22.64 and $33.96.
  • Hiring bonus of $2,000 paid in two installments: $1,000 after 30 days and $1,000 after 6 months. Current City of Glendale employees are not eligible for hiring bonuses.

Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Leave
  • 10.5 paid holidays per year with an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave for cultural or religious holidays.
  • Vacation accrual: 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours/17.25 days per year), increasing to 6.12 hours after 5 years and 7.6 hours after 10 years.
  • Sick leave accrual: 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours/14.25 days per year).
Retirement
  • Participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
  • Mandatory contributions deducted every pay period with a current rate of 12.00%.
Responsibilities
  • Perform skilled and semi‑skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Operate light, medium, and heavy equipment including a 3‑ton utility truck, backhoe, combination jetter and vacuum truck, dump truck, utility crane truck, hydro‑excavation equipment, and closed‑circuit TV.
  • Use power and hand tools, light and heavy equipment to accomplish tasks.
  • Explain and enforce rules and regulations pertaining to safety, barricading, traffic direction, hazardous materials, and equipment operation.
  • Maintain daily work records; perform computerized data entry.
  • Transport and set up supplies and equipment; perform required safety checks.
  • Install, test, maintain, and repair water mains, sewer mains, service valves, fire hydrants, manholes and stormwater facilities.
  • Tap water mains and install service lines and water meters.
  • Test, repair, maintain, replace, and relocate existing large and small water meters.
  • Perform water turn‑off/on for scheduled maintenance and emergencies.
  • Respond to high and low water usage complaints.
  • Install, pull, relocate, test, repair, assemble, and read water meters.
  • Construct and maintain large meter vaults and manholes.
  • Excavate job sites and restore sites to pre‑work conditions.
  • Investigate sewer odors, stoppages, and runoff requests including stormwater related issues.
  • Hydro‑clean sewer and storm lines to remove obstacles.
  • Assist in setting up, operating, and maintaining closed‑circuit television equipment and televising of sewer and storm lines.
  • Operate city vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Two years' experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or operation of light, medium, and heavy equipment related to the area of assignment. Operation of equipment such as a 3‑ton utility truck, backhoe, combination jetter, vacuum truck, dump truck, utility crane truck, hydro‑excavation equipment, and close circuit televising truck.

Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.
