Service Worker (Parks-Irrigation)

This is the first level in the Service Worker series. Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility.

Essential Functions

1. Performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, and repair work, plumbing, landscaping, and repair of specialized equipment.

2. Operates various light, medium, and heavy equipment including trucks, truck with trailers.

3. May provide general direction to other employees and volunteers.

4. Uses various hand and power tools to accomplish tasks.

5. Explains and enforces rules and regulations pertaining to safety, barricading, and operation of equipment.

6. Notifies residents and businesses of work being performed, answers questions from citizens.

7. Maintains daily work records; may perform some computerized data entry work.

8. Transports and sets up supplies and equipment; makes required safety checks.

9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Parks:

1. Maintains parks, rights-of-way, parking lots, and bike paths (irrigation systems).

2. Maintains and adjusts sprinkler systems, provides irrigation services, and maintains irrigation equipment.

3. Inspects, operates, and maintains sprinkler and drip irrigation systems and performs preventative maintenance and repairs as needed.

4. Services, repairs, and maintains various mechanical parts and equipment of various parks, trails, facilities, and sports complexes.

5. Monitors and ensures all irrigation equipment always remains operational.

6. Responds to and resolves citizen complaints pertaining to park facilities.

7. Explains and enforces park policies and regulations to park patrons.

8. Maintains high visibility to dissuade vandalism and crime in park facilities.

9. Ensures that reserved facilities are maintained in a safe, clean condition; checks for permits.

10. Provides assistance in emergency situations; calls for police or medical assistance.

Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success Factors

One (1) year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment. Preference will be given to applicants with prior public works experience.

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.

Knowledge of:
Rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to area of assignment. Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned areas of responsibility. Hazard, safety rules, precautions related to equipment operation. Confined space entry procedures.

Ability to:
Read and understand blueprints, technical diagrams, and maps. Understand and follow safe working practices. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Deal courteously with the public. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and citizens. Operate and perform maintenance and minor repair on light, medium, and heavy equipment. Perform general maintenance and service requirements of equipment in area of responsibility.

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work independently. Accurately and timely complete reports and logs; record daily work activities and enter and retrieve information on computers, cell phones, and tablets. Maintain the appropriate state of Arizona driver license with relevant endorsements. Coordinate hand and eye movements.
