Temporary Aquatics Swim Instructor – Summer 2026
Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, Pool Manager, Assistant Manager, and the Head Guard, the Temporary Aquatics Swim Instructor will provide safe, effective pool operations, lifesaving services, and customer support during the summer season.

Training & Certifications
Required training sessions will be scheduled as needed. Aquatics positions require certifications prior to hiring. Lifeguard training is typically offered between February and March 2026
. The City accepts American Red Cross or Star Guard ELITE certifications;
American Red Cross is preferred.
If you are not currently lifeguard certified, you may register for a course offered by the City at
Our Water Safety Instructor (Swim Instructor) certification course for 2026 has concluded. Applicants who do not hold this certification are encouraged to apply for the Lifeguard position.

Hours & Pay
- Hours:
Up to 40 hours per week, scheduled as needed - Hourly rate: $26.00
- FLSA status:
Non‑exempt (eligible for overtime pay for hours worked over 40 per week) - Sick time:
Accrues at .034 hours per hour‑paid
Benefits & Retirement
The position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Current contribution rate is 12%. Contributions are mandatory and collected each pay period.
Responsibilities
Be responsible for the day‑to‑day safe pool operations.Keep certifications up‑to‑date and valid in lifeguarding, CPR, and first aid training as well as public safety and rescues.Perform rescues and/or maintain crowd control during emergency situations by responding quickly and calmly.Maintain high standards of safety and skills/in‑service training.Be familiar with and implement pool rules and regulations.Exhibit a friendly, critical details, and concise communication skills verbally and written.Maintain welcoming, firm, and consistent customer service practices with staff and patrons.Be knowledgeable and able to communicate details of City of Glendale Aquatics programs to patrons as well as other staff members.Monitor own schedules, hour limits, and report schedule adjustments to management as needed.Monitor facility functions to prevent accidents, drowning, and near drowning as well as report any oddities that should be addressed by management and / or maintenance.Monitor the activities of swimmers and patrons to detect and address problem areas.Perform rescue techniques and render first aid during emergency and non‑emergency situations.Complete accurate and honest daily / weekly timecards, hours worked reports in MUNIS, accident reports, incident reports and inventory reports on time.Do the custodial cleaning of pool facility, including but not limited to restrooms, changing rooms, staff areas, decks, the pool, etc.Maintain adequate endurance and fitness through swimming and exercise.Assure the timely opening and closing of the facility.Become familiar with city rules and regulations for employees and patrons and be able to communicate these rules and regulations.Know the proper use of job‑related tools such as a whistle, megaphone, rescue tube, and first aid equipment, among other tools.Only if cash handling trained through the City of Glendale, employee will handle money in a safe and accurate manner and provide exceptional guest services.Takes, reads, records, reports problems and understands pool chemistry tests.Reports maintenance problems to Aquatics Coordinator, Assistant to the Aquatics Coordinator and possibly the Aquatics Maintenance Staff. May be asked to do some pool maintenance duties, for example, vacuuming the pool, placing the aerator or automatic vacuum in the water and turning it on and ensuring it is working.Teaches group swim lessons to…
