Position: Recreation Leader, Temporary (Up to 19 Hrs/Wk)

About Us

The City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department is split into two distinct areas:

  • The Parks Division manages and maintains all public parks, open spaces, trails, storm water retention basins, landscaping at municipal facilities and Thunderbird Conservation Park. The Division is also responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety and security of park and facility use.
  • The Recreation Division offers opportunities to enhance the social, physical, mental and economic health of our community through a variety of diverse recreation programs and facilities. Recreation programs and events are held at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Glendale Adult Center, Historic Sahuaro Ranch, the five community centres and at basketball, tennis, skate courts and other recreation facilities throughout the city.

Our Recreation Division offers a wide variety of programmes, including youth and adult sports, fitness classes, art workshops, special‑interest activities, science programmes, and more. We are currently seeking enthusiastic, friendly individuals who enjoy working in a vibrant community recreation centre environment.

In this role, you will:

  • Plan, implement, supervise, and coordinate recreation activities for community members.
  • Ensure participant safety while enforcing City policies and procedures.
  • Prepare facilities for events and programmes, including meeting rooms, fields, and courts.
  • Set up and maintain sports equipment, audio‑visual gear, tables, chairs, and other materials as needed.
  • Provide guidance to participants on proper equipment use and safety.
  • Inspect equipment for necessary repairs and ensure it is properly stored after programmes.

Additional Information
  • Hours: Up to 19 hours per week, scheduled as needed
  • Hourly rate: $16.50
  • FLSA status: Non‑exempt (eligible for overtime pay for hours worked over 40 per week)
  • Work locations: Rose Lane Aquatics Center, 5003 W. Marlette Ave, Glendale, AZ 85301
  • Sick Time: Accrues at .034 hours per‑hour‑paid

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Facilitate day‑to‑day operations (including set‑up and organization) of various recreation programmes, events and activities.
  • Inventories programme supplies regularly and provides information about any items that might be needed.
  • Sets up and takes down equipment for activities and events; supervises and coaches participants as directed.
  • Monitors programme participants, enforces rules and regulations, and monitors security of facilities.
  • Interacts with the public in responding to questions and assisting in preparation for programmes and events.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Knowledge of
    • Parks and Recreation department policies and regulations
    • Various types of recreation programmes (i.e. athletic games, drama, gaming, music, dance and/or computers).
    Ability to
    • Interact with citizens in a fun, friendly and courteous manner
    • Interact effectively and courteously with the public and other employees
    Special Requirements
    • Must be at least 18 years in age
    • Must have/obtain First Aid/CPR Certification within 30 days of Hire
    • Must be able to obtain a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card

    Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
