Operates heavy automotive and other specialized equipment in the Sanitation Division of the Public Works Department.

- Operate heavy automotive and specialized equipment including street sweeper, one‑man sanitation truck, 40‑yard container truck and trailer.
- Operate brush tractor with grapple buckets and hand‑load rear‑loaders, balers, sorting lines, crane trucks, and forklifts.
- Fill the street sweeper water tanks and regulate valves controlling water supply.
- Empty containers into the sanitation truck and operate the hydraulic packer to compact refuse; identify non‑collectable, acceptable waste.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment such as cleaning fueling, checking and adding oil, filling radiator, maintaining tire pressure, and adjusting or replacing gutter brooms, conveyor belts, and pick‑up brooms.
- Perform safety checks on equipment.
- Monitor to assure quality in refuse collection, recyclable collection, and in the sorting and bailing of recyclable materials.
- Operate portable radios.
- Keep daily log of work performed, mileage, tons dumped, equipment condition and performance.
- Complete accident report forms and timesheets.
- Complete public violation notifications and corrective action tags.
- Repair and deliver containers for commercial and residential customers.
- Operate city vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
One year of experience in the operation of heavy automotive and specialized equipment.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.
Knowledge Of- Operation of various types of heavy equipment
- Hazards and safety rules and precautions in heavy equipment operation
- Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in equipment operation
- Street layouts and routes
- Safe, efficient operation of assigned equipment and observance of traffic laws and regulations
- Record work activities and maintain daily logs and journals
- Detect needed repairs to make necessary operational adjustments
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work independently
- Coordinate eye and hand movements
- Fill out accident reports
- Deal with the public in the resolution of sanitation service problems
- Identify hazardous or special waste and take appropriate reporting action
- Operate city vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- A Class B commercial driver’s license at time of application. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on City business must possess a current, valid State of Arizona class‑appropriate driver’s license and complete all required training.
- Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse is required for all CDL holders. Selected candidates must register and authorize the City of Glendale to conduct limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their employment.
- This position is classified as safety‑sensitive and requires drug and alcohol testing prior to employment and throughout the period of employment. A post‑offer physical assessment is required.

Physical Requirements / Working ConditionsWork requires lifting up to 50 pounds, pushing and climbing. Rough driving, driving in heavy traffic and exposure to dust, fumes, hot weather and hazardous materials such as solvents, adhesives, paints, hot oil and other chemicals.
