Position: EDUCATION ASSISTANT - CLASSROOM AND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS (2336)

Overview

Performs a variety of instructional and support tasks assisting teachers and staff in classroom settings and in before‑ and after‑school programs operated by the Child Development and Child Care (CDCC) Department.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists students with academic tasks such as reading, writing, math, and other instructional activities.
  • Provides individual and small group supervision and support under the direction of certificated staff.
  • Assists in preparing and organizing instructional and enrichment activities in both classroom and after school settings.
  • Supervises students during activities, meals, recreational time, and field trips.
  • Assists in setting up and cleaning up classroom or program spaces.
  • Supports students with special needs, including those with learning or behavioral challenges, under the direction of a specialist.
  • Prepares materials for displays, activities, and instructional use.
  • Administers, scores, and records student work and assessments as directed.
  • Performs related clerical duties including maintaining student files and operating audiovisual and office equipment.
  • Assists in serving meals and snacks and supports routines such as napping (when applicable in early education or CDCC settings).
Qualifications Knowledge Of
  • Student needs and behavioral characteristics.
  • Basic principles of child development.
  • Classroom and after‑school program procedures.
  • English usage, grammar, and spelling.
  • Record‑keeping methods and office equipment operation.
Ability To
  • Assist in implementing instructional and activity plans.
  • Supervise and support students in both academic and recreational settings.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Learn and work within the framework and requirements of the program to which assigned.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Coursework related to student instruction, early childhood education, or child development.
  • Experience working with children in a school or childcare setting.
  • Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

Compensation & Benefits

Permanent employees earn a salary based on the sixth step of the salary range with potential for increases after a 130‑day probationary period and annually thereafter. Substitute positions are paid a fixed hourly rate. Benefits for employees working less than 4 hours per day include vision care. All full‑time employees are eligible for the California Public Employees Retirement System and Federal Social Security program.

Additional benefits include holidays, sick leave, and retirement eligibility for those working half‑time or more.
