Position: YARD DUTY ASSISTANT (2353)

Yard Duty Assistant

Under general supervision of the site administrator and/or Elementary Yard Duty Leader, supervises students, monitors, supports, and controls the designated areas of an elementary school campus and parking areas, and assists in assuring the safety of students; and performs other related duties as assigned. Duties may include classroom or basic office work as needed.

A Yard Duty Assistant assists in maintaining proper environment, discipline and student control during non-instructional periods; and does related work as required. A Yard Duty Assistant has a severely limited scope of responsibility and is not involved in assisting students reach educational objectives or in delivery of such service. An Elementary Yard Duty Leader supervises student conduct on assigned campus areas to assure a safe and positive educational environment;

provides work direction and guidance to Yard Duty Assistants, and performs additional duties as assigned by the site administration.

Immediate supervision is provided by the site administrator and/or Elementary Yard Duty Leader. No supervision is exercised over district personnel.

Provides supervision to children during non-instructional and instructional periods, under direction of a site administrator and/or Elementary Yard Duty Leader. Supervises students and enforces school procedures in assigned areas of the playground, outdoor eating areas, cafeteria, indoor assembly areas, halls, restrooms, and at other locations during assigned hours. Performs routine classroom instructional and support tasks under the close guidance of a teacher when not providing yard duty supervision during unstructured times, such as recess, lunch, gate duty, etc.

Enforces school rules and safety regulations, security, discipline and activity rules where assigned. Uses Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and other appropriate techniques and strategies to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior and an appreciation of human diversity. Works closely with staff in eliminating behavior problems occurring during assigned work hours in the activities in which students are engaged, such as at recess, lunch, before, and after school.

Ensures that no unauthorized persons are on the school grounds during lunch or recess and that students do not leave the grounds during that time without permission. Maintains two-way radio contact with appropriate staff members and the school office. Reports unsafe conditions, problems or situations of a serious nature, including recurrent behavior problems and safety hazards to Principal, Elementary Yard Duty Leader, or other appropriate certificated employees.

Uses good judgment regarding appropriate action to assist an injured or physically ill student. Reports instances of accidents and may administer minor first aid to students. Reports instances of vandalism, property damage, and theft. Escorts students to various parts of the campus, and assists ill students to the health office. Patrols student restrooms to control over-crowding. Assists students with various indoor and outdoor activities.

Evaluates the effectiveness and safety of activities and events and provides corrections in program as needed. Facilitates quality interaction with classroom teachers and school staff. Participates in facilitating a well-rounded program that will support all aspects of youth development including activities that will provide positive self-concepts; encourage students to think, reason, question, and experiment; enhance physical development, teamwork, and cooperation;

and facilitate student led activities. Works closely with support personnel to provide guidance and direction concerning outdoor activities. Maintains open communication with the site administrator and Elementary Yard Duty Leader. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
Positive behavior modification strategies and techniques. Organizational process of program development, implementation, and supervision for children and adults. Child health and nutrition. Appropriate use of English language usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and composition. Policies and procedures of district programs and activities. Classroom procedures and rules of conduct. Basic emergency, first aid, and health care techniques. Basic record keeping techniques. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

Ability to:
Reinforce positive behaviors, motivate, and address inappropriate behaviors with students. Deal firmly, tactfully, and effectively with students. Actively supervise students during program time, snack, outdoor, classroom, and transition time. Demonstrate a patient, receptive, and understanding attitude toward students. Work with discretion and maintain confidentiality of student and family information. Maintain a safe, clean and orderly environment. Meet schedules and timelines.
