Overview

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world‑class research university and a member of the "Trojan Family," which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university what it is.

The USC Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute (INI) aims to enhance discovery through the application of imaging and other data technologies in the study of the brain. The Institute is dedicated to excellence in data acquisition, analysis, stewardship and computational innovation for the purpose of biomedical research.

INI is comprised of the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI), the Imaging Genetics Center (IGC) and the Center for Image Acquisition (CIA). LONI seeks to improve understanding of the brain in health and disease, managing computational infrastructure and developing scientific approaches for comprehensive mapping of brain structure and function. IGC studies brain imaging, genetics, and their connections. CIA houses a Siemens Magnetom Prisma, a 3 Tesla MRI scanner and a 7T MRI scanner, focusing on innovative MR image acquisition in normal and diseased subjects.

In addition to research goals, INI trains the next generation of scientists through the Masters in Neuroimaging and Informatics program, a one‑year advanced program that provides students with a deep understanding of the scientific and clinical underpinnings of neuroimaging science and how to leverage it in large‑scale biomedicine.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Professor of Research (non‑tenure track) will be responsible for:

  • Developing and validating biologically relevant models from complex MRI data in 3‑D neuroimaging.
  • Applying mathematical and computer science methodologies to understand biological structure and function.
  • Leading efforts in brain mapping, visualization, and the automatic identification, detection, modeling, and measurement of anatomical and functional features within brain scans.
  • Conducting research in medical imaging analysis, particularly of 3‑D brain images.
  • Writing and publishing first‑author papers in premier medical imaging conferences and journals.
  • Securing external funding and collaborating with researchers within and outside USC.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Computer Science, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field with strong interdisciplinary computational research background.
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in mathematical modeling, biomedical image analysis, statistical analysis, bioinformatics, big data, multimodal MRI, methods development in MRI, or data mining techniques.
  • Extensive programming skills in C++, Python, Matlab, Java, or R.
  • Deep knowledge of current challenges and state‑of‑the‑art techniques for structural brain mapping, data analysis, modeling, statistics, and visualization with large‑scale magnetic resonance imaging datasets.
  • Experience in machine learning, interactive 3‑D visualization, research software development, dissemination, and training.
  • Expertise in diffusion MRI tractography, microstructure imaging, brain lesion segmentation, or preclinical imaging is an additional plus.
  • Exceptional publication record, demonstrated ability to secure external funding, and commitment to collaborative research.
Compensation

The annual base salary range for this position is $90,000–$120,000.
