Position: Biostatistician I

About USC Norris

The USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Southern California (USC Norris) was founded in 1971 and has been continuously funded as an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center since 1973. USC Norris has a rich tradition of collaborative research and serves as a major regional and national resource for cancer research, prevention, treatment and education.

Position Overview

The Biostatistics Core at USC Norris has an opening for a biostatistician to support clinical and laboratory research efforts at the Cancer Center. We are seeking a Biostatistician I to support a wide range of cancer research projects spanning basic, translational, and population sciences. Candidates should have solid training in biostatistics, statistics, data science, or a related quantitative field. Experience with clinical trial data analysis is preferred;

exposure to bioinformatics or high-dimensional data is a plus. The ideal candidate is a fast and enthusiastic learner who can adapt to rapidly evolving data types and analytical methods. This role requires strong teamwork, a service-oriented mindset, and excellent communication skills (written and verbal). A positive attitude and strong work ethic are essential in our collaborative core environment.

Responsibilities

Essentials include but are not limited to:

  • Assist Core faculty in grant and protocol development, including sample size and power calculations, endpoint definition, and specification of planned statistical methods.
  • Support clinical trial work by contributing to protocol development, statistical analysis plans, interim and final analyses, and preparation of tables/figures for trial reports and publications.
  • Perform data management and statistical analysis (e.g., in R, SAS, or Python), including data cleaning, creation of analysis datasets, and quality checks for a variety of cancer-related data types.
  • Conduct descriptive and inferential analyses, fit appropriate statistical models, and help interpret results in a clinically and biologically meaningful way.
  • Prepare clear tables, figures, and concise summaries of methods and results for abstracts, manuscripts, presentations, and internal reports.
  • Provide ongoing statistical consultation and support to a wide range of investigators, contributing to effective communication, good research practices, and a collaborative core environment.
Required Qualifications
  • Candidates should have solid training in biostatistics, statistics, data science, or a related quantitative field.

  • Experience in a complex medical or academic setting.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Comfortable interfacing with highest level of university leadership and university supporters/volunteers.

Requirements
  • Minimum Education:

    Master’s degree; combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education.
  • Minimum Experience:

    1 year; combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experience.
  • Minimum Field of Expertise:
    Experience in Biostatistics, Statistics or related field;
    Experience with SAS, R or STATA.
Benefits & Compensation

This position is hybrid and employee must report to work at the USC Health Science Campus in Los Angeles, CA when scheduled. Work hours and on-site days may be subject to change depending on business needs. The annual base salary range for this position is $85,894 - $90,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
