The Position

Open & Promotional Examination - Six Months Probationary Period

Under general supervision, performs journey level work in the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of refrigeration, air-conditioning, heating and ventilating equipment in City facilities. Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains various HVAC equipment such as: compressors, pumps, motors, package units, heat pumps, ducting, mixing boxes, digital and pneumatic controls, air handlers, chillers and boilers.
  • Assists in the inspection of major repairs performed by contractor.
  • Analyzes air conditioning problems and adjusts pneumatic, electric, electronic, direct digital systems and energy management programs as necessary to properly control the HVAC systems.
  • Installs, troubleshoots and repairs automated building control systems.
  • Estimates requirements, orders materials and equipment necessary for installation and repair and maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration units.
  • Keeps routine work records and prepares necessary reports.
  • Drives City truck to work locations in outlying City facilities.
  • May act as lead worker to Building Repairers and Maintenance Workers.
  • May be assigned to assist in other maintenance work as required.
  • Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of this position are performed in a safe, efficient manner.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.
Minimum Requirements

An equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Experience:

Four years of experience in the maintenance and repair of large commercial heating, air conditioning or refrigeration systems; two of which must include working with the installation and repair of direct digital control systems. Experience performing HVAC mechanic work in a government or university environment is highly desirable.

Education/Training:
High School Diploma or equivalent.

License(s) / Certification(s):
Valid California Class C driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Equipment and procedures utilized in maintaining heating and air conditioning principles. Heating and air conditioning principles. Knowledge of and skill in:
Exceptional customer services practices. Ability to:
Provide exceptional customer service to all employees and vendors. Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet the standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period. Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair refrigeration of HVAC systems. Establish smooth working relationships and resolve interpersonal conflicts. Install, repair and maintain computerized control and energy management systems. Install, repair and maintain digital control systems.

Maintain routine work records. Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct. Read blueprints. Read, write and comprehend directions in English. Other Characteristics Willingness to:
Work overtime as requested or required. Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.

Selection Process

Evaluation of Application:

Candidates must pass each exam component with a minimum score of 70.00% in order to be placed on the eligible list. Performance Exam:

Time and place of the examination will be announced. Evaluations will be based on the candidate's education and experience relevant to the position. Examinations will assess evaluate the candidate's education, experience, knowledge and skills related to the job. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the examination components or their weighting. If changes are necessary, candidates will be informed of the specific examination components and their weight before the examination is administered.

The selected candidate will undergo a background check, including Livescan fingerprinting.
