Position: Mechanic 1

Brief Description

The Mechanic 1 systematically diagnoses, trouble-shoots, repairs, and replaces defective components on the following: passenger cars & vans; limousines, funeral coaches, light, medium & heavy-duty trucks; specialized vehicles, utility & heavy-duty trailers; agricultural tractors, back hoes, loaders, trenchers, forklifts, impactors, turf vacuum units, and other miscellaneous equipment.

The Mechanic 1 systematically diagnoses, trouble-shoots, repairs, and replaces defective components on the following: passenger cars & vans; limousines, funeral coaches, light, medium & heavy-duty trucks; specialized vehicles, utility & heavy-duty trailers; agricultural tractors, back hoes, loaders, trenchers, forklifts, impactors, turf vacuum units, and other miscellaneous equipment.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Reviews simple, specifications, oral instructions, work orders, inspection forms, or general requirements.
  • Consults directly with the department supervisor and/or management to organize and discuss the methods, tools, and materials required for each project or assignment.
  • Performs all types of intermediate maintenance, diagnoses, inspections, evaluations, and repairs to faulty systems, such as hydraulic or air brakes; front and rear suspensions; manual and power steering systems; gas or diesel power trains; cooling fuel, exhaust, and electrical systems, and other related systems not listed using the proper electrical, or mechanical tools and equipment. Identifies sources of potential premature failure, safety hazards, and potential malfunctions to avoid component failure or road breakdown.
  • Ability to read electrical, mechanical, and related sketches, drawings, specifications, manuals, and/or blueprints, and follows diagrams or plans to diagnose, repair, and/or modify current systems as required.
  • Selects proper tools and equipment including basic hand tools, wrenches, various meters, drills, impact wrenches, measuring tools, variety of test & performance equipment; welding equipment, fabrication and machining equipment and instruments; circuit testers, engine & vehicle hoists, and other miscellaneous tools or equipment as required.
  • Selects and install all necessary replacement parts for best application, such as motors, meters, connectors, relays, fuses, starters, switches, lights, mechanical fasteners, wire, connectors, protection devices, hydraulic, water & fuel pumps; filters, tune‑up kits, hoses, radiators, belts, tires, wheels, brake components, or other after‑market and OEM components as required. Replaces a variety of damaged materials pertaining to but not limited to the above-mentioned items as required.
  • Requisition s materials & supplies as required.
  • Recommend substitute materials or components to improve or expedite work when required.
  • Routinely performs lubrication and annual preventive maintenance and repair work.
  • Routinely performs equipment modifications, and/or upgrades to systems, such as installation of propane kits, Plexi-glass windows, hydraulic system conversions, wheel conversions, etc.
  • Routinely performs brake jobs, engine tune‑ups, a/c system repair, suspension work, electrical work, and other related interior and exterior work.
  • Fabricates, welds, modifies, and constructs components to improve vehicle functionality or to replace defective components.
  • Occasionally assists transportation with furniture moves and product deliveries.
  • Occasionally delivers or retrieves vehicles from outside repair shops.
  • Operates hydraulic jacks, and/or vehicle hoists to gain access to mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic components fastened to the underside.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. A minimum of three-years of increasing responsibility for automotive and/or diesel truck maintenance and repair experience is required. Training:
    Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and some specialized training in automotive and/or diesel truck maintenance. The specialized training consists of practical/hands-on experience in automotive and/or diesel truck maintenance and repair.
  • Requires a valid California Driver's License – Class “C.”
