Position: Equipment Mechanic I

The Position

OPEN & PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - SIX MONTHS PROBATIONARY PERIOD Positions in this classification work under general supervision and perform independent journey-level repair, maintenance and overhauls of diversified power-driven equipment. Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following: Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards. Performs preventive maintenance and general repair work, following proper diagnostic and troubleshooting in all general automotive areas, including, but not limited to work on: engines, transmissions, differentials, steering and suspension, brakes, clutches, belts, hoses, lights, tires of all sizes and batteries.

Performs inspections and safety checks on vehicles repaired or maintained by contract, such as transit buses. Overhauls and repairs motors, transmissions, differentials and universal joints, as well as electrical fuel injection, suspensions and hydraulic repairs on a large variety of vehicles and equipment. Transports a variety of automotive equipment. Lifts, carries, loads and unloads heavy equipment components. Cleans, washes and polishes vehicles and motor equipment.

Fuels vehicles. Completes routine reports, prepares and maintains stock records and reports. Inspects and diagnoses operation of power-driven equipment to determine need for repairs. Overhauls and repairs clutches, brakes, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, motors, ignitions, carburetors, fuel systems, electrical and hydraulic systems of a variety of equipment. Interprets electrical circuits and machine drawings of automobile and motorized equipment. Performs minor acetylene and electric welding incidental to minor repairs.

Prepares records of work done and parts used. Directs the work of a helper. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner. Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.

Minimum Requirements

An equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Experience

Three years experience in automotive repair work including the repair of electronic ignition systems, air conditioning systems, front suspensions and four-wheel alignments.

Education/Training

Completion of some formal training or education in the field of mechanical maintenance.

License(s)/Certification(s)

Valid Class C California driver's license. Some positions require Class A, B or M licenses and/or endorsements, before completion of the probationary period. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

Applicable safety rules, practices and procedures. Automotive equipment maintenance, repair, troubleshooting and diagnosis. Basic automotive and motor repair procedures. Tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.

Ability to:

Provide exceptional customer service to all employees and vendors. Communicate effectively in English. Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period. Lift and carry heavy equipment. Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct. Perform minor acetylene and electric welding. Read and interpret electrical circuits and machine drawings of equipment.

Read, write and comprehend directions in English. Repair electronic ignition systems, air conditioning systems, and vehicle bodies Road test diversified automotive equipment, including motorcycles. Other Characteristics

Willingness to:

Work overtime as requested and differing shifts as required. Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.

Selection Process

EVALUATION OF APPLICATION: Submitted Application will be reviewed to ensure applicants meet the minimum requirements. Only the most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process.

Candidates must pass each exam component with a minimum score of 70.00% in order to be placed on the eligible list.

PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION: (Weight of 100%)

Evaluations will be based on the candidate's education and experience relevant to the position. Examinations will assess evaluate the candidate's education, experience, knowledge and skills related to the job. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the examination components or their weighting. If changes are necessary, candidates will be informed of the specific examination components and their weight before the examination is administered.
