Digital Navigation Volunteer
Location: Fieldwork/in-person
Start Date: May 2025
Duration: 4-6+ Months; 2-4 hours per week; during standard business hours.

About the JobThe Digital Navigation Volunteer will act as a trusted guide to accessing affordable digital devices and building digital literacy skills for vulnerable community members. Responsibilities include providing individualized or small group assistance to refugees, migrants, aging individuals, those with language barriers, and individuals with disabilities who face digital access barriers. Services may be provided in person at the IRC-LA’s Glendale office, in client homes, or in other safe locations, as well as via phone, email, or video chat.
The focus will be on helping clients locate affordable internet and devices, and coaching them in digital skills to participate fully online.
- Gain meaningful 1:1 service experience with vulnerable community members.
- Experience intergenerational teaching opportunities.
- Initiate contact with clients seeking assistance or identified by IRC-LA.
- Assess client needs, develop success plans, and complete enrollment packets.
- Discuss clients’ internet access, device use, and digital experiences.
- Set goals for digital skills development.
- Provide information on low-cost technology options and support device acquisition.
- Coach clients on using technology for various online activities.
- Track client progress, maintain notes and outcomes data.
- Ensure at least 15 hours of digital skills coaching per client before concluding services.
- Safeguard client privacy and dignity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Fluent in spoken and written English.
- Proficiency in Spanish, Farsi, Armenian, Dari, Pashto, or Arabic is preferred but not required.
- Curiosity and willingness to learn with clients.
- Active listening skills.
- Willingness to drive to meet clients when virtual services are insufficient; valid driver’s license and insured vehicle required.
- Availability of 1-2 hours weekly with flexible scheduling.
- Cultural humility and patience when working with diverse backgrounds.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Attend an info session.
