Position Title:

Field Project Technician (Entry Level) - )

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a Field Project Technician (Entry-level Civil Engineering Technician) in Glendive and Wolf Point. The role coordinates and conducts inspection, sampling, testing, and staking and surveying procedures to verify construction project compliance with specifications, Department requirements, and contract agreements. The position reports to the Field Project Technician III and provides guidance to less experienced technicians.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Project inspection and testing procedures, site features and materials
  • General construction engineering principles; sampling and laboratory testing;
    State, AASHTO, FHWA, ASTM standards
  • Surveying and highway construction methods; project design and construction criteria and standards
  • Property site specific circumstances (soils, temperature, weather conditions, gradations, segregation, stability, flows, additives, absorption rates)
  • Highway construction terminology; business English; basic algebra, geometry, trigonometry
  • Interpreting design plans and specifications; documenting field data; constructing field notes; communicating effectively with contractors and landowners
  • Operating specialized sampling and testing equipment; using office equipment for data calculation and recording (PCs, calculator, laptop computers)
