Position Summary
The CNC Mill Operator / Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating 3-axis CNC vertical milling machines equipped with Fanuc controls. This role requires a skilled operator who can read blueprints, apply GD&T concepts, set work offsets and tool heights, and perform precision quality inspections to deliver components that meet exact specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Machine Operation & Setup:
Set up and operate 3-axis vertical CNC mills using Fanuc controls. Set tool heights and work offsets, and use edge finders accurately. - Blueprint & Blueprint Interpretation:
Interpret complex mechanical drawings, blueprints, and job specifications using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). - Quality & First Article Inspection:
Perform detailed first article inspections and ongoing inline checks on machined parts using precision measuring instruments and standard tools (e.G., tape measures, micrometers, calipers). - Material Handling & Routing:
Ensure proper material certifications are verified for specific critical spec grades prior to machining. Accurately identify, tag, and route finished parts. - Efficiency & Downtime Minimization:
Coordinate workflow to maximize spindle time and minimize equipment downtime while prioritizing schedule demands. - Equipment Maintenance:
Perform daily upkeep, periodic cleaning, and routine preventive maintenance on processing equipment and work area. - Documentation:
Accurately record job time, part quantities, and operational data as required by daily shop procedures. - Safety Adherence:
Strictly follow standard operating procedures and shop safety protocols at all times. - Other Duties:
Perform other shop-related tasks as assigned by management.
- Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Vocational, technical school, or trade apprenticeship completion in Machining Technology is strongly preferred. - Experience:
Minimum of 2+ years of hands-on experience setting up and operating CNC vertical milling machines. - Technical
Skills:
Direct experience with 3-axis CNC vertical mills and Fanuc controls. Proven ability to set work offsets, tool heights, and utilize edge finders. Strong working knowledge and understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing). Ability to read a standard tape measure, calipers, and precision measuring tools accurately. - Mathematical Ability:
Ability to calculate fractions, decimals, proportions, and apply practical shop geometry and algebra. - Reasoning Ability:
Ability to troubleshoot operational issues independently, follow detailed instructions, and handle standard production variables.
Physical Capabilities:
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Requires standing for extended periods, frequent reaching, stooping, bending, balancing, and manual dexterity to handle tools and materials.
Work Environment:
Loud shop environment. Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, metal shavings, coolants, oils, and airborne particles.
