Physical requirementsOften required to work non-traditional working hours which include weekends, holidays, and nights. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, run, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, controls, or tools. Must be able to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and smell.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.
Possession of a valid driver's license
Job SummaryThe Streets and Parks Laborer performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the City streets, parks, signage, sidewalks, curb & gutter, street lighting, parking structures, storm water system, and the operation of medium and heavy construction and other specialized equipment while providing seamless cooperative service to our residents and visitors.
Essential Job FunctionsAn employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:
- Cut grass and trims weeds on city property and parks using lawn mower and weed trimmer.
- Dig flower beds and plants flowers using gardening tools.
- Clean buildings, wash windows, and empty trash cans.
- Paint interior and exterior walls and trim.
- Operate a backhoe to dig trenches.
- Drive truck and load fallen tree limbs and roadside trash onto truck.
- Repair streets and sidewalks with asphalt, cold patching materials, and concrete.
- Removal of snow and ice during winter months.
- Maintain and repair municipal buildings' plumbing and electrical systems.
- Repair or replace building brick, stone, and concrete.
- Maintain and repair wood parts of buildings.
- Replace worn or damaged parts.
- Hand wash vehicles.
- Perform related tasks as required.
An employee in this class must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:
Knowledge- Light, medium, and heavy equipment operating principle, practices, and procedures.
- Minor equipment maintenance and repair functions.
- Hazards and safety precautions common to mechanized equipment operation.
- Handle stress effectively without it interfering with performance.
- Organize, set priorities, and exercise sound independent judgement within areas of responsibility.
- Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain highly effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Work alone and make decisions with little to no supervision.
- Act effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
- Adhere to all City and departmental safety policies and procedures.
