Job Description

SGM is seeking a highly qualified Senior Civil Engineer I or II with jurisdictional dam experience to join our Team. This position is primarily in-person and based in either our Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Durango, or Gunnison, CO office. Regular in-office attendance is required to facilitate mentoring of junior engineers. Job Requirements:
  • Thorough understanding of engineering principles, practices, and tools related to embankment dam design and construction.
  • Ability to lead probable failure mode (PFM) review meetings with dam safety officials.
  • Ability to undertake Comprehensive Dam Safety Evaluation and Risk Assessments & Risk-Informed Decision Making
  • Thorough understanding of Colorado Rules and Regulations for Dam Safety and Construction (2020) and related dam safety industry procedures for risk management.
  • Expert in hydrologic and hydraulic analysis using HEC-HMS, & RAS, HEC-SSP, and a basic understanding of 2D hydraulic modeling.
  • Significant experience in earthen embankment reservoir design within Colorado.
  • Demonstrable experience in irrigation design and stream diversions (beneficial).
  • Thorough understanding of OSHA safety regulations related to assigned projects.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts with clients.
  • Ability to be both creative and analytical.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related Engineering field required, master’s degree preferred.
  • Current Colorado PE or ability to get licensure by reciprocity within 90 days.
  • 12- 22 years of experience, with a focus on new and rehabilitation of Colorado jurisdictional reservoirs.
  • Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.
Job Duties:
  • Regularly develops project scopes/budgets with limited input required from others.
  • Leads competitive proposal and business development efforts.
  • Serve as designated client service manager. Responsible for relationship-building with the full spectrum of clients.
  • Manages scope, budget, and schedule (without oversight) for most projects or major tasks on large, multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Focuses on planning, directing, and reviewing the work of junior engineers and performing higher-level tasks, such as creative solution identification, critical problem solving, risk assessment, etc.
  • Frequently serves as QA/QC officer.
  • CAD responsibilities are limited.
  • Often participates in critical construction milestone events and troubleshooting activities.
  • Self-performs a dam-related project, especially for critical clients and/or when high-level experience/judgment is required or when critical to business development.
  • Common to serve as Engineer-of-Record and review work of other sub-consultants.
  • Interact effectively with elected and reviewing officials on a routine basis.
  • Resolve the majority of conflicts with clients.
  • Potential to serve as a Team Leader with one or more direct reports.
  • Regularly lead and often assist with prospective new client relationship building.
  • Will lead or assist with the development and promotion of new services.
  • May lead "thought leadership" activities and lead or assist with Team/Sector business development strategies.
