Responsibilities
- Supervise the caseloads of assigned probationers, meet with probationers in their homes or at their schools/workplaces, conduct interviews, and perform social or presentence/pre‑disposition investigations. Evaluate probationers’ progress, perform searches, and execute arrests. Provide closely structured supervision and observation to ensure compliance with probation conditions, directing and counseling probationers and parents/guardians, and conducting field contacts (home, work, treatment facilities, schools, community restitution, or detention) as part of a team.
Build relationships to encourage compliance with case plans through frequent telephone, work/school site, and home contacts. - Obtain, assemble, secure, keep, and file a complete identification record for each probationer, including arrest reports and contact notes related to compliance and the case plan, and prepare written reports for the court. Monitor restitution payments and probation fees, ensure victims' notification rights are provided according to statutory requirements, investigate referred cases, and produce written reports to the court.
- Perform searches, breathalyzer/urinalysis collection, and make a documented effort to locate absconders. Serve warrants, make arrests, and bring defaulting probationers before the court for revocation hearings. Appear and testify in court. As a Probation Officer I, hold the authority of a Peace Officer for the performance of duties.
- In confrontational situations with probationers or others, respond effectively and employ defensive tactics and techniques learned at the Defensive Tactics Safety Training Academy. Demonstrate proficiency in physical and verbal defensive tactics, including:
- Forcefully raise arms above the head.
- Perform minor aerobic activity.
- Stand for up to two hours at a time.
- Engage in balanced movements.
- Throw hand strikes (fist and palm heel strikes).
- Use impact weapons (baton swing, 16‑ounce).
- Kicks below 24 inches (front snap kicks).
- Perform controlled falls and return to standing unassisted.
- Complete hand‑strike and kick drills at partial speed.
- Sustain exposure to Oleoresin Capsicum spray.
- Engage in fighting techniques while on the ground.
- Bend knees lower than center, touch ground with one hand, and perform break‑fall and baton closing techniques.
- Bend knees to a 45‑degree angle for ground techniques.
