Position: Research Software Engineer at the StarPlan Section of the Globe Institute

Research Software Engineer – Star Plan Section, Globe Institute

The Star Plan section of the Globe Institute at The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen is looking for a Research Software Engineer with effect from 15 August 2026 for a term of 4 and half months.

About Us

Star Plan is a multidisciplinary research center dedicated to understanding the formation and evolution of planetary systems, combining cosmochemistry, planetary science, astronomy, astrophysics and geochemistry. The successful candidate will collaborate with an international team of researchers, including Michiel Lambrechts and Anders Johansen on understanding the origins of planetary formation through a theoretical and computational approach.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and optimize the Genga GPU-based symplectic N-Body integrator for HPC cluster environments such as Tycho and Gefion.
  • Maintain, develop and document the planet formation module to make it available for group members and the scientific community as open source.
  • Provide assistance with code development in various ongoing scientific projects at the theoretical planet formation group using Python, Fortran, C and C++ in the context of high-performance supercomputing at national and international facilities.
Qualifications
  • PhD in astrophysics or a related field.
  • Experience developing software for scientific purposes.
  • Familiarity with GPU computing and the CUDA programming language.
  • Experience managing large-scale code development in a scientific context.
  • Written and spoken fluency in English.
Terms of salary and employment

Employment will be as academic research staff under the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary is based on seniority and is negotiable with potential supplements. Working time is 37 hours per week on average with flexible hours.
