Job Description

Department:
Special Education Department

Responsibilities:

  • Screen, evaluate and provide appropriate services to students with communication disorders (articulation, voice, language, and fluency).
  • Administer speech and language screening procedures; evaluate students with suspected communication disorders; report and interpret findings to the team.
  • Utilize formal and informal measures for evaluating communication disorders; write clear and objective evaluations.
  • Develop behaviorally stated goals and objectives for each student recommended for speech and language remediation based on evaluative data.
  • Implement the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each student served, and periodically evaluate its effectiveness; develop and maintain a regularly scheduled speech and language program.
  • Participate as a member of the Team of Qualified Professionals and the IEP team, contributing evaluation findings and collaborating on the development of the IEP.
  • Diagnose students’ eligibility consistent with District, federal and state policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Participate in timely computer logging services for Medicaid billing, use the web-based IEP system, and participate in the time studies for administrative Medicaid claiming as scheduled.
  • Adhere to requirements and state and federal laws regarding students with disabilities.
  • Maintain web-based portfolio for students assigned to case-load as appropriate.
  • Proficient in language of instruction.
  • Allocate reasonable time for observation, testing, case management and paperwork.
  • Assist in assessing, identifying and maintaining assistive technology equipment and supplies to meet the goals and objectives of students’ IEP.
  • Collaborate with and provide consultation to classroom teachers, parents, caregivers and other school staff to implement and integrate therapy strategies across all settings.
  • Participate in school-based problem solving teams to identify at-risk students with expressive or receptive language delays, assist in designing and implementing research-based interventions, and monitor students’ progress.
  • Develop individual or group activities and programs in schools to address speech, language, or swallowing disorders.
  • Document observational notes to portfolios of students.
  • Attend professional meetings scheduled for speech-language pathologists; participate in planned in-service/professional growth activities.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
  • Maintain electronic and hard-copy records for student therapy plans and progress tracking.
  • Contribute to the development of district-wide special education initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree and current RI Certification.
  • A passion for learning and self-development and demonstrated ability to acquire and use knowledge and skills from ongoing professional growth activities, coursework, training, and other experiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and effective experience with the development and implementation of instructional programs for students with significant disabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and effective experience with development and implementation of programs that maximize participation and independence in the school setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and effective experience with developing, implementing, and scaffolding academic, functional and social/behavioral skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and effective experience with standards-based curriculum / lesson design, instructional strategies and assessment techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and effective experience with gathering and analyzing data, tracking student performance, and making classroom and team-level decisions based on data.
