Job Description

FUNCTION: The Coach helps each participating student achieve a high level of skill and an increased appreciation for the values of discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and academic performance. The Coach is dedicated to developing a successful team and the individual student athlete, considering not only win/lose records but specifically focusing on achieving personal growth through athletic participation and competition.

REPORTS TO: Athletic Director and Principal

Anticipated Duties
  • Coaches individual participants, small groups and teams, as appropriate, in the skills necessary for a successful experience.
  • Supervises individual team members and teams at all times.
  • Knows and implements most current rules, regulations and policies, including sports rules, RI Interscholastic League Regulations and general district policies related to students’ academic, career, and personal social development.
  • Works with school officials to monitor the academic performance of the student athletes and stresses the importance of high academic performance as well as the leadership role of student athletes in the school.
  • Consistently functions as a role model for team members by demonstrating respect for officials, competitors, visitors and observers while under stressful situations.
  • Works closely with the athletic director and other coaches scheduling practices and games.
  • Informs the athletic director of the condition of the facility, equipment and uniforms.
  • Communicates frequently with the athletic director concerning team members, team issues and all team related activities.
  • Notifies the Athletic Director of any actions, equipment or conditions that could possibly compromise the safety of students and adults.
  • Delegates coaching responsibilities to assistant and volunteer coaches.
  • All other duties as defined by the athletic director and principal.

  • QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Experience coaching adolescent age students in competitive sports.
    • Coaching application.
    • Meets all requirements adopted or revised by the State of Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Interscholastic League, or the Foster-Glocester Regional School District to include, but not limited to, the following requirements:
      • All Coaches will have to receive an updated National and State BCI Check (beginning in the school year ).
      • Current & Valid First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate.
      • NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course.
      • NFHS Concussion in Sports Course (Must be taken annually).
      • NFHS Protecting Students From Abuse (Must be taken annually).
      • NFHS RI State Component Course (New Coaches to the District Only).
      • NFHS Sudden Cardiac Arrest Course (Must be taken annually).
      • NFHS Implicit Bias Course (Must be taken annually).
      • NFHS Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention (Must be taken annually).
      • NFHS Heat Illness Prevention (Must be taken annually).
      • NFHS Title IX.
      • NFHS Sportsmanship.
    • And/or qualifications deemed substantially equivalent to those listed above may be accepted.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
