Job Description
Materials Engineer (Supply Chain) – Safran Landing Systems, Gloucester (UK). Hybrid role. This position is part of the Materials & Processes Laboratory, supporting supply‑chain monitoring for landing‑gear parts, with opportunities to participate in mechanical testing and forensic investigation.
Key Responsibilities- Support laboratory tasks for raw‑material suppliers, forgers and foundries.
- Review metallic supplier performance and analyse production and historical data.
- Implement improvement plans for steel, aluminium and titanium within the Safran Landing Systems supply base.
- Assist in technical audits of suppliers, in cooperation with the Quality Assurance department.
- Support qualification of new raw‑material suppliers such as steel mills.
- Assist the Materials Validation Board (MVB) with internal duties.
- Collaborate with engineering and internal customers on materials‑related topics.
- Assist with laboratory testing campaigns for metallic materials, surface‑engineering protection systems and non‑metallic materials.
- Participate in the forensic investigation of landing‑gear parts.
- Degree in metallurgy, materials engineering or materials science.
- Knowledge of steels, titanium and aluminium alloys.
- Data‑processing software skills.
- Ability to understand and interpret material and process specifications.
- Hands‑on experience with metallographic preparation, microscopy and materials testing.
- Strong technical writing skills for detailed reports and documentation.
- Effective communication with internal customers and the supply chain.
- Flexible – willing to undertake a range of duties, including supplier visits.
- Experience in supply‑chain monitoring of forging or melting practices of metals.
- Understanding of degradation and failure mechanisms relevant to engineering materials.
- Flexibility to travel to suppliers multiple times a year.
- Early finish on Fridays.
