Applied Materials Ion Implant Defect Science group

is seeking a Physicist/Scientist to join our team! We are a small, highly collaborative group working across multiple products to deepen our understanding of defect formation and transport mechanisms, enabling better defect control and improved yields in our semiconductor process tools.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct defect-related experiments, including tool preparation, interpreting designed experiment test plans, and shepherding wafers.
  • Design relatively simple 2D/3D structures for tool testing, as needed.
  • Analyze data from particle experiments using Python, MATLAB, Excel, JMP, and/or other analytical tools.
  • Present conclusions and recommendations to the team and larger organization through graphs, summaries, and technical presentations.
  • Contribute to the development of a defect library from a large volume of historical data, requiring strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Partner with scientists and engineers to define and execute effective designed experiments.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong academic record, with a preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.
  • Knowledge of basic descriptive statistics and an interest in advanced statistical analysis.
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization tools such as Python, MATLAB, JMP, Excel, or similar software.
  • Experience with 2D/3D design software such as Solid Works, AutoCAD, or similar CAD tools.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Hands-on experimental or laboratory research experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical findings to diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Research or experience in semiconductor process development, plasma physics, vacuum systems, contamination control, or defect-related studies.
  • Knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, and data-driven problem solving.
  • Experience working with large experimental datasets and developing data libraries, databases, or data management systems.
  • Experience with scientific programming and data analysis using Python, MATLAB, JMP, or similar tools.
