Make a Difference Through Food

Do you enjoy being out on the road, staying active, and making an impact in your community? The Open Door is looking for a Food Rescue Associate to help keep good food moving to our clients and partners across the North Shore. You’ll play a key role in rescuing surplus food, supporting nutrition programs, and ensuring our partners and clients receive high-quality products safely and on time.

The Open Door is a leading food equity organization based in Gloucester on Boston’s North Shore. The organization provides critical food resources to 11,893 people annually. This is an opportunity to use your skills to make a difference. Our mission is to alleviate the impact of hunger in our community.

What You’ll Do

You’ll be the backbone of our food rescue efforts — making sure good food is safely collected, transported, and delivered so it reaches the people and programs who need it most.

  • Food Rescue & Deliveries: Conduct vehicle inspections, load/unload donations, assess food quality, follow safe driving practices, and record donation weights and details. Pack, load, and deliver food orders while ensuring proper temperature control and assisting partners with unloading.
  • Warehouse: Maintain an organized loading dock and warehouse, weigh and log donations, operate pallet jacks, check produce quality, follow FIFO, and retrieve/pack goods for other programs.
  • Other Program Support: Support the Fulfillment Center and volunteers with order picking and stocking. Help run Mobile Market events as needed by packing and staging market products.

This is not necessarily an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, skills, duties, requirements, efforts or working conditions associated with the job. While this is intended to be an accurate overview of the current job, management reserves the right to revise the job or to require that other or different tasks be performed when circumstances change (e.g., emergencies, changes in personnel, workload, etc.)

What You’ll Bring

  • Commitment to social justice and the mission of The Open Door
  • Strong communication skills and a hospitable, patient demeanor
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and push/pull bins up to 400 lbs
  • Comfortable standing, walking, climbing stairs, and getting in/out of vans
  • Flexible, detail-oriented, and able to multitask
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Ability to work with people of all cultures, identities, and backgrounds
  • Starting range $18-$19.50 per hour
  • 20 hours per week/Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., occasional nights & weekends
  • Prorated benefits including PTO, earned sick time, matching retirement

The Open Door is an equal opportunity employer.
