A unique and exciting technical career supporting frontline public services for Gloucestershire County Council.
** Please note we are recruiting to 2 positions.
Join a Team That’s Evolving and Growing
Our Corporate Fleet Unit (CFU) within Gloucestershire County Council is now an established and forward‑thinking department, continually evolving as we modernise how we manage, maintain, procure and innovate across our diverse fleet — including the highly specialised operational fleet of Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service (GFRS).
With ongoing investment in new vehicles, upgraded systems, Electric and low‑emission technologies, advanced equipment and major fleet improvement projects, this is your opportunity to join a service that is growing rapidly and always seeking to improve. Your contribution will help shape the next phase of our development as we push standards higher and deliver an exceptional, resilient fleet for the county.
About the Role
As a Workshop Technician, you’ll work on one of the most diverse and interesting fleets in the region. No two days are the same — and your technical skill will directly support emergency services and essential council operations.
Your day, week, and month could include:
- Servicing and repairing HGV, LGV and passenger cars, including statutory inspections.
- Inspecting, servicing and repairs of specialist fleet equipment.
- Diagnostic investigations across light and heavy fleet & equipment.
- Mobile maintenance, travelling across the county to keep GCC and GFRS vehicles roadworthy.
- Working on fire appliances, pumps, boats, and specialist rescue equipment.
- Servicing portable power units, lighting rigs and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.
- Training on equipment used across the GCC/GFRS fleet.
- Supporting equipment readiness for front‑line fire appliances.
- Fabrication, engineering, vehicle conversions, and occasional roadside recovery (full training provided to a national standard).
- Collection and delivery of vehicles as required.
- Attending and delivering technical training to the wider team.
- Attending locations to support our on-call and out-of-hour cover.
- You will be reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, Workshops Manager & GFRS Control when on-call.
As an Equal Opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all backgrounds. Please note that this role requires a good level of physical fitness and mobility for vehicle access, as well as occasional outdoor work.
Your work will be key to helping frontline services operate smoothly, and you’ll be supported every step of the way.
About You
We are looking for a proactive, skilled, and adaptable HGV Technician who can work under their own initiative and who enjoys a varied workload.
You’ll bring:
- Strong diagnostic, service and repair experience.
- The ability to prioritise and manage workloads effectively.
- Flexibility and a methodical approach.
- Excellent communication and teamwork.
- Experience working within a busy workshop (desirable).
You’ll also need to support our 24/365 call‑out cover for GFRS, taking part in our standby rota. Standby currently operates two weeks in every five, with paid standby allowances and opportunities for overtime above your basic pay.
About Us
- 37‑hour working week, Monday–Friday (normal hours), plus great overtime opportunities.
- Guaranteed Paid, rota’d standby/on‑call allowances of over £30 per 24 hours
- Welcome Payment of up to £3,500 on top of earnings (Subject to T&Cs)

- Corporate provided mechanical tools or replacement tool allowance (subject to T&Cs)
- Corporate Fleet Unit Uniform and all PPE
