RoleWe have an opportunity for a Regional Customs Compliance Manager, Americas, to join our team. You will be responsible for directing and maintaining our commitment to all aspects of global compliance in the region, with the main focus on customs and import/export compliance. The region comprises North and South America and includes LATAM. Most of the role will be devoted to the States, but the role also supports our operations in Mexico and our business activities elsewhere in the Americas.
This role will provide support, advice, and training, and be responsible for directing local implementation and documentation of required processes and auditing the same. The Regional Customs Compliance Manager will be a technical expert and process-focused leader who will play a central role in HS classification governance, Export control and sanctions management, audit readiness and recordkeeping, ERP/SAP GTS integration initiatives, as well as trade remedy tariff mitigation and duties recovery efforts.
you will do
- HS Classification & Customs Governance
- Lead the governance of Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS/HS) classification to ensure accuracy, consistency, and defensibility across a regional environment.
- Research and assist with classification determinations, rulings, and documentation; establish standard work, controls, and training to address current classification support gaps.
- Ensure customs processes and procedures are appropriate for the risk and complexity of the company and that they are effectively implemented and followed.
- Trade Remedy Tariffs, Mitigation & Recovery
- Drive strategies and standard work to manage trade remedy tariffs (e.g., Section 301/232, IEEPA), including exclusion applications, duty drawback, post-summary corrections, tariff engineering, and other recovery opportunities.
- Ensure cross-border movement processes function smoothly while identifying, prioritizing, and efficiently managing issues and risks related to tariffs and customs.
- Audits, Assessments & Recordkeeping
- Build and sustain audit-ready documentation and recordkeeping practices that meet regulatory requirements and internal policies.
- Conduct risk-based assessments and audits; drive corrective actions and continuous improvement across sites and functions.
- Maintain accurate import/export records, including use of government portals.
- Sanctions, Export Controls
- Responsible to develop and maintain Export Control Classification Program, specially taking into account EAR requirements.
- Ensure existing processes to identify and mitigate sanctioned country/party risk are implemented and followed at all in-region sites, even taking into account OFAC guidelines.
- Provide guidance to employees concerning applicable export controls and sanctions requirements and obligations.
- ERP / SAP GTS Integration
- Partner with IT and business teams on ERP/SAP GTS integration projects to embed trade compliance controls within core systems.
- Define business requirements, test solutions, and operationalize standard work for integrated tools, train users, and drive adoption.
- Regional Operations & Maquiladora Support
- Provide support, advice, and training regarding maquiladora structures and related activities in Mexico.
- As needed, manage or oversee import/export shipments for the region, including drafting commercial documents, customs filings, licenses, and optimizing transportation with respect to cost and transit time.
- Strategy, Culture & Cross-Functional Enablement
- Drive a strong compliance culture, ensuring trade compliance planning and strategies are linked to the corporate vision.
- Draft standard operating procedures and develop and implement a risk-based approach to all areas of customs compliance, working side-by-side with trade compliance managers and cross-functional teams.
- Provide training and support the business for all trade compliance- related matters.
- Regular travel to in-region sites as required (up to ~30%).
- Bachelor's degree required.
- 5+ years of relevant experience, including experience with maquiladora structures and with Section 301/232 and IEEPA import procedures.
- Knowledgeable on customs regimes, FTA qualification, HTS classification, origin, valuation, export controls (EAR), and sanctions programs (including but not limited to those maintained by the U.S.).
