Position: CTE/Careers Teacher - State Teacher I - Campus at Lookout Mountain

CTE/Careers Teacher – State Teacher I – Campus at Lookout Mountain – Golden, CO

Provides academic, vocational, and workforce readiness instruction to youth in institutional facilities. Delivers career‑ready performance‑based learning in areas such as graphic design, business and marketing, hairstyling, barbering, and other career‑technical pathways. Works collaboratively with community programs and state agencies to support education services for DYS youth.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain an appropriate classroom setting using effective classroom management skills, PBIS system, and behavior tools.
  • Assesses new and continuing students; prepares unit lesson plans, daily plans aligned with state standards and critical skills; implements assessment tools to evaluate student progress.
  • Implements research‑based education strategies, including technology, to accommodate multi‑age and multi‑level students.
  • Selects behavior and classroom management techniques in line with DYS framework; ensures accommodations for special education students.
  • Maintains accurate instructional records in IC and/or Trails and fulfills deadlines.
  • Supports additional classrooms as needed and provides instruction for career‑technical education pathways.
  • Participates in meetings with Central Education Office, principals, treatment providers, and other teachers to review student progress.
  • Develops comprehensive implementation plans aligned with school development plans and quality standards.
  • Engages in professional development and safety training; applies learning to classroom practice.
  • Assists with safety and security of the school and facility; follows Division of Youth Services policies, trauma‑informed culture, motivational interviewing, restorative justice frameworks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Current, valid Initial or Professional Teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education.
  • Substitutions: interim teacher license, temporary educator eligibility, or vocational credential from the Colorado Community College System (require transcripts and evidence of occupational experience).
  • Eligible U.S. Service Member applicants may satisfy content knowledge requirements based on time of service and honorable discharge.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional teaching experience in hands‑on skills and work‑readiness programs.
  • Program development experience.
  • Experience programming for post‑secondary and secondary youth.
  • Experience working with at‑risk or adjudicated youth.
  • Proficient use of data to inform instructional practice.
  • Trauma‑informed knowledge and skills.
  • Community and work‑related experience relevant to the current job market.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience implementing articulated instructional systems.
  • Understanding of classroom‑based behavioral interventions.
  • Ability to build rapport with students while maintaining boundaries.
  • Experience with urban and at‑risk populations.
  • Interpersonal communication and oral comprehension.
  • Problem‑solving skills.
  • Adherence to safety and security protocols.
  • Technology‑enhanced instruction capabilities.
Highly Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; attention to detail.
  • Strong decision‑making and follow‑through.
  • Ability to interact positively with administrators, staff, parents, clients, community members, and the judicial system.
  • Collaborative problem‑solving and feedback usage; ability to create positive culture and climate.
Conditions of Employment
  • Full background check, fingerprinting, court database, Medicare fraud database, reference checks, license verification, drug screen, PREA, Trails/DIANA/CAPS where applicable.
  • Must be 21 years old or older.
  • State of Colorado residency required at application and throughout employment.
  • MVR check; valid, non‑restricted Colorado driver’s license required.
  • Travel to training events and shadowing events in Denver area and other state facilities.
  • Successful completion of DYS Pre‑service Training Academy, Field Training Program (FTO), and mandatory annual training.
