Golden, CO. Position Type:
Postdoc (Fixed Term).
Hours:
40 per week.
National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) invites a postdoctoral researcher to join the Chemical Catalysis and Reaction Engineering group within the RRES Center. This role concentrates on reaction engineering for biomass fractionation, aiming to improve atom economy of pulping infrastructure and downstream processing of solid and liquid products in existing or retrofitted kraft pulping systems.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct reaction engineering studies for biomass and waste‑feedstock conversion, focusing on fractionation to polysaccharide‑rich pulps and lignin‑rich oils.
- Plan and execute laboratory experiments, including lignin oxidation catalysis, catalyst design, and reactor development.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across multiple institutions.
- Interpret analytical data (e.g., GC‑MS) and troubleshoot experimental challenges.
- Communicate scientific findings through written reports, oral presentations, and peer‑reviewed publications.
- Adhere to safety protocols and maintain high quality research standards.
- Recent PhD graduate (within three years) with a background in chemical engineering, chemistry, or related field.
- Demonstrated experience in reaction engineering and transport phenomena in complex reactor systems.
- Ability to design, build, and safely operate novel reactor systems.
- Strong record of peer‑reviewed publications and a commitment to safety.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to deliver results on aggressive timelines.
- Expertise in biomass conversion, lignin chemistry, and catalytic depolymerization.
- Experience with downstream processing and separations.
- In‑depth knowledge of analytical measurement techniques (e.g., GC‑MS).
- Familiarity with biorefining processes involving complex solids.
- Annual salary range: $76,600 – $126,400, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance; short‑term disability insurance; pension benefits; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match; life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance; personal time off (PTO) and sick leave; paid holidays.
- Potential eligibility for performance‑, merit‑, and achievement‑based awards.
- Possible relocation expense reimbursement.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, disability, gender identity, genetic information, marital status, domestic partner status, military or veteran status, national origin/ancestry, race, religion, creed, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding), sexual orientation, and any other applicable status protected by federal, state, or local laws.
