Cybersecurity Researcher – 5G & Wireless Resilience Expert

Location:

Golden, Colorado

Position Type:

Role Overview

The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) Cybersecurity Research Center (CRC) seeks a cybersecurity professional with deep technical expertise in 5G and wireless communication technologies. The successful candidate will lead innovative research at the intersection of wireless technology and energy system security, guiding multidisciplinary teams to build cyber resiliency for the nation’s energy infrastructure.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as senior technical leader and subject‑matter expert in 5G and wireless cybersecurity.
  • Define new research directions, establish technical strategies and architectures, and develop advanced cybersecurity solutions for next‑generation wireless systems.
  • Lead R&D efforts at the intersection of cybersecurity and 5G/wireless systems to support next‑generation energy system architectures.
  • Develop and implement secure communication protocols and architectures for distributed, edge, and wireless‑connected energy devices.
  • Advance laboratory capabilities in wireless and 5G emulation environments, secure network modeling, simulation, testing, and evaluation.
  • Lead vulnerability analysis of wireless systems (5G, LTE, Wi‑Fi) integrated into critical infrastructure.
  • Develop new tools and methodologies for red‑team, penetration testing, and cyber‑physical risk assessment in wireless energy systems.
  • Collaborate with cross‑disciplinary teams on hardware/software security, supply‑chain assurance, and system integration.
  • Write scripts and develop applications to automate data collection, processing, and analysis tasks in cybersecurity contexts.
  • Produce technical reports, prototypes, and publications to document research findings.
  • Present research results internally and externally to sponsors and partners.
  • Assist with staff planning, recruiting, mentoring, and team building.
  • Support cyber business development efforts and build research collaborations with the energy industry, other DOE labs, and national security partners.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications
  • Researcher IV:
    PhD and ≥4 years of experience, OR Master’s and ≥7 years, OR Bachelor’s and ≥9 years of experience in relevant field.
  • Researcher III:
    PhD, OR Master’s and ≥3 years, OR Bachelor’s and ≥5 years of experience in relevant field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, and procedures related to cybersecurity.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, problem‑solving, and project‑management skills.
  • Ability to use various computer software programs.

Required Qualifications
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance at the Q/TS/SCI level; a polygraph may be required.
  • Eligibility:
    At least 18 years old, U.S. citizenship (with limited exceptions) as required by DOE regulations.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Must meet the educational requirements prior to employment start date.
  • Must obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as required by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12.
  • Must pass a pre‑employment drug test in compliance with federal law; marijuana testing may be included unless prohibited by state law.
