NLR is a national laboratory focused on energy systems research and development located in Golden, Colorado.
Job DescriptionAs a member of the Architect and Engineering Support (AES) team, this Facilities Electrical Engineer will work on multiple projects concurrently at NLR's South Table Mountain (STM) and Flatirons (FC) research campuses. The engineer will provide power distribution designs, utilize electrical modeling software, and collaborate with project managers, the facilities CAD team, and stakeholders to ensure electrical designs and construction documentation meet NLR’s requirements and applicable building codes.
Responsibilities- Collaborate with stakeholders to develop scope, statements of work, and cost estimates for electrical engineering projects.
- Contribute to design guidelines, master construction specifications, and best‑practice documents for electrical engineering.
- Review external and internal project drawings, specifications, calculations, RFIs, ASIs, shop drawings, product submittals, and coordination drawings.
- Attend construction meetings, site observations, and final punch walks, providing technical guidance.
- Perform commissioning of internal designs, conduct field surveys, and produce field‑redline documents.
- Assist in developing laboratory procedures, hazard assessments, and campus electrical modeling.
- Maintain and update NLR’s electrical studies and coordinate short‑circuit, arc‑flash, and coordination studies using SKM.
- Provide CAD assistance (AutoCAD/Revit) for record keeping and as‑built drawings.
- Follow all ESHQ policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Relevant Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of experience or Master’s degree with 3+ years, or higher degree/experience equivalent.
- Strong application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in electrical engineering.
- General knowledge of related disciplines and laws, regulations, and standards.
- Leadership, project management, and problem‑solving skills.
- Computer proficiency with engineering, CAD, and office software (AutoCAD, MS Office, Project).
- Eligibility to access Controlled Unclassified Information; citizenship may be a requirement.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Colorado or ability to obtain within 12 months.
- Experience in facility engineering: design, construction observation, utility coordination, and stakeholder management in R&D, commercial, or industrial settings.
- Knowledge of facility and building systems, codes, and site infrastructure for commercial and industrial facilities.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Experience on government projects or in federal facilities.
- Experience with substation design and operation.
