The Grid Automation and Controls Group of the Power Systems and Engineering Center (PSEC) at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is seeking an exceptional Ph.D. graduate to support research in the operation, control, modeling, and simulation of the power grid as it transitions to a low‑carbon, high‑renewable grid. The candidate will work on research projects that employ machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to solve power system problems, with a special focus on Generative AI (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLM).
The ideal candidate will have in‑depth knowledge and extensive research experience in GenAI and LLM and will apply this knowledge to solve energy system problems. Strong programming skills and foundational knowledge of neural networks, state‑of‑the‑art learning algorithms, and their applications to complex systems are required. Knowledge and experience with power systems is a plus. The candidate should be able to conduct research work with limited guidance from senior researchers and collaborate with project principal investigators and other power system researchers on the same project team.
Qualifications
- Recent Ph.D. graduate (within the last three years)
- Relevant Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields
- Experience in one or more ML/AI techniques
- Strong programming skills
- In‑depth knowledge of graph neural networks and reinforcement learning
- Proven record of research experience related to power systems and power system optimization
- Experience in natural language processing, generative AI, large language models, foundation models
- Proficiency in Python and related machine learning/reinforcement learning packages
- Experience using high‑performance computers and Linux systems
- Strong publication record

Annual Salary Range$76,600 – $126,400
