National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) – Separation Science & Engineering Group

Position Overview

Year‑round internship (June/July
2026 start) working full‑time on‑site to support laboratory separation projects for bio‑derived products and critical minerals, with exposure to wet chemistry, chromatography, electrochemical separations, and automation programming.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct laboratory‑based separation experiments and sample preparation.
  • Perform protein purification and multi‑scale chromatography.
  • Execute electrochemical separations.
  • Assemble, modify, and troubleshoot custom separation equipment.
  • Assist in developing automation scripts (Python, Rust) for custom systems.
  • Carry out experiments with minimal supervision while strictly adhering to safety protocols.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Post‑undergraduate:
    Bachelor’s degree earned within the past 12 months or currently enrolled full‑time in a bachelor’s program.
  • Graduate / PhD:
    Currently enrolled full‑time in a master’s program, or earned a master’s within the past 12 months.
  • Demonstrated laboratory experience in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and/or biochemistry.
  • Experience following standard laboratory safety procedures and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Strong time‑management, attention to detail, and ability to learn quickly.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with wet‑chemistry protocols or chromatography techniques.
  • Familiarity with programming (Python, Rust).
  • Experience in scaling or customizing separation equipment.
