Lead Firearms Instructors (LFIs) are the first point of contact for Federal Flight Deck Officers when they arrive at the training venue; they check them in, verify weapons and credentials, conduct training, and oversee the course of fire at the gun‑range. They ensure the safety of all personnel on the range, secure SSI and SPII information during and after requalification sessions, oversee time keeping of all SFI labor hours, and comply with internal compliance training events.
Howa Lead Firearms Instructor Will Make an Impact
LFIs are the on‑site training manager for the program, conduct all classroom instruction, deliver the approved TSA training and safety brief, introduce and describe new equipment, and ensure all students sign the safety briefing. They maintain a minimum instructor‑to‑student ratio of 1:6, keep a sufficient inventory of training supplies, verify weapons and credentials before training, ensure proper target scoring and completion of administrative forms, certify qualification scores, and handle unloaded weapons and equipment when a candidate fails to qualify.
They secure SSI and SPII in compliance with TSA MD 2100.2, Privacy and Information Collection Policy, and TSA MD 1400.3, TSA Information Security Policy.
Education / Equivalent Training:
Current or former federal law‑enforcement agent, officer, or civilian employee who has completed a recognized federal firearm instructor training program deemed acceptable by TSA/FAMS. Examples include FLETC Firearms Instructor Training Program, FAMS Firearms Instructor Training Program, FBI/DEA Firearms Instructor Training Program, United States Postal Inspectors Firearms Instructor Training Program, or equivalent. All LFIs must complete a 2‑3 day firearms re‑qualification training program under the technical direction of the SAC, FAMS Training Division, and FFDO Program Office covering re‑qualification courses of fire, procedural requirements, use of a GFE AED, and basic first aid.
Experience:
5 years of firearms training experience.
Education:
Associate’s Degree or the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications or training, or work/military experience.
Working Conditions:
The work is typically performed at an indoor or outdoor gun range. Employees must handle weapons and ammunition, wear hearing protection, wash hands after handling ammunition, and may need to lift light equipment. The position requires successful completion of the security application and a background investigation clearance before starting.

The likely hourly rate for this position is between $30.44 - $41.18. Salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside this range.
