Position: CORRECTIONAL YOUTH SECURITY OFFICER II - Campus at Lookout Mtn

This position is open to current Colorado residents only.

Each employee is required to work at the assigned work location during scheduled work times.

Division of Youth Services (DYS) provides a continuum of residential and non‑residential services encompassing juvenile detention, commitment, and parole. DYS is mandated to provide care and supervision of youth committed by the District Court to the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services. The Division operates fifteen secure facilities serving youth aged 10 to 21, who are pre‑adjudicated, sentenced, or committed.

The Division also contracts with private residential and non‑residential providers statewide. For pre‑adjudicated youth, DYS manages the Colorado Youth Detention Continuum, a State‑funded program that provides services to youth at risk of further progression into the juvenile justice system. In addition to residential programming, DYS administers juvenile parole services statewide.

Duties Safety/Security

Work involves providing direct care, safety, security, and supervision of adjudicated and/or pre‑adjudicated youth in a locked setting. Supervision focuses on staff location, mobility, and continuous observation. Enforce established security rules and behaviors, supervise daily living and leisure activities, orient youth to the unit/facility, intervene early in potentially volatile situations, and provide immediate intervention in crisis situations. Employ sound judgment and emotional control when evaluating crisis events, give crisis intervention in a timely manner, consider the physical and mental well‑being of all juveniles and staff.

Participate in de‑escalation and debriefing of all incidents pursuant to prevailing DYS policy. Monitor movement of youth, escort and transport to activities or appointments internal and external to the agency, conduct searches according to schedule or as needed. Conduct pat searches and strip searches by same‑sex staff, except when a juvenile identifies as transgender or intersex; searches are conducted according to the juvenile’s stated preference.

Identify, document and seize contraband as directed. Check windows, doors, locks, and grounds to minimize escape risk. Adhere to all Suicide Precaution Monitoring (SPM) policies and standards. Monitor SPM or other special observation status youth. Use effective communication, verbal de‑escalation, and a strength‑based approach. When de‑escalation fails, follow division physical response protocols and place youth on seclusion. Monitor medical watches as required.

Supervise prevention of sexual contact and comply with PREA policies.

Lead Worker Duties (as assigned/required)
  • Coaches, teaches, and mentors other employees; role‑models adherence to DYS policy and facility implementing procedure at all times.
  • Provides shift briefing and communication of pertinent information about youth, building needs, living unit areas, special status youth, high‑risk youth, behavioral contracts and safety plans.
  • Reviews and oversees proper implementation of Juvenile Suicide Precaution Monitoring, Special Management Programs, seclusion, behavior contracts and safety plans.
  • Identifies milieu concerns and provides solutions to minimize, reduce and eliminate potential threats.
  • Reviews minor rule violations and approves proper interventions; ensures youth completes assigned interventions; ensures minor rule violations comply with DYS policy.
  • Reviews major rule violations and provides constructive feedback to staff writing incident reports; ensures major rule violations comply with DYS policy; conducts juvenile disciplinary hearings and upholds due process and implementation of restorative community justice and interventions for all youth.
  • Ensures adherence to all fire, safety and sanitation standards throughout the facility, according to DYS policy and facility implementing procedure; responds to, and provides solutions and coaching as needed to rectify emergency concerns.
