Summary:

The Unit Secretary‑Nursing Assistant II for the Center for Nutrition Diabetes Health performs a variety of secretarial support and basic nursing care activities for patients and families during their assigned shift, working under the supervision of the RN/LPN as defined by the NC Board of Nursing. Communicates with nursing staff, provider office staff, and/or other entities regarding patient information, while carrying out assigned patient care, receptionist and secretarial duties.

This role serves as a liaison between patients, families, and nursing staff while performing essential secretarial duties and basic nursing tasks.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in providing quality patient experience:
    • Receive, greet and direct patients and visitors professionally.
    • Answer telephone calls professionally.
    • Schedule, verify, and manage patient appointments.
    • Collect insurance card information and input data in system. Collect patient copays and monitor cash drawer balances, coordinate cash intake with accounting department.
    • Process patient referrals and provide appropriate documentation. Complete all required documentation accurately and thoroughly according to department specific standards. May obtain, verify or update patient information as required. Ensure files, documents, schedules, and records are current and organized.
    • Provide assistance and customer service to patients, visitors, providers and teammates.
    • Order and maintain nutritional supplies.
  • Provide quality patient care:
    • Measure vital signs including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height and weight.
    • Promptly report abnormal vital signs and changes in the patient's condition to the primary nurse or charge nurse.
    • Clean and prepare patient room after each appointment.
  • Promote effective communication between patients, teammates, providers, and visitors. Communicate pertinent patient information to other teammates during handoff report or sooner if needed. Communicate patient or family questions or concerns in a timely manner.
  • May collaborate with office staff and other external entities when needed. Ensure teamwork by demonstrating cooperative, constructive, and problem‑solving interactions. Accept delegated tasks and assignments that are within scope of practice. Seek help when needed and provide help to others when available.
  • Perform routine office duties including filing, faxing, and sorting/distributing documents.
  • Perform other routine secretarial tasks involved in processing other office documents. Utilize all software necessary to perform basic tasks.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and orderly environment for self, patients, and teammates.
  • Respond appropriately and promptly in emergency situations.
  • Order and maintain supplies and equipment in accordance with office needs.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education

      * Completion of state approved Level II Nurse Aide training and competency evaluation program or its equivalent.

      * High School Diploma or equivalent required; any higher education from an accredited college will supersede this requirement.
    • Licensure / Certification

      * Current listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide II registry.

      * Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
    • Experience

      * At least one year in a health care role preferred.

      Skills and Abilities



      * Provide excellent patient and customer service to all patients and their visitors as well as to internal and external teammates.

      * Effective interpersonal skills to collaborate with teammates and relate to patients with varying degrees of illness.

      * Attention to detail. Ability to set priorities and organize many functions at the same time for an entire unit.

      * Flexibility and calmness required in order to perform a variety of functions in a setting which may be stressful or change unexpectedly due to a patient's condition.

      * Effectively use Microsoft Office products to produce reports and documents.

      * Follow oral and written instructions.

      * Speak, read, write, and communicate effectively.

      * Learn new software rapidly. Knowledge of Epic or EMR helpful.

      * Familiarity with basic medical terminology.
    • Valid NC Driver's License

      * If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
