Summary Objective

Hiring range is negotiable between $50,401 and $65,017 depending on a candidate's qualifications and experience.

Police – BLET Trainee

The Police – BLET Trainee is intended for those applicants who are seeking a career in law enforcement who are not yet certified law enforcement officers and will require training at a Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Academy. Police – BLET Trainee(s) will attend and must successfully complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) as required by the N.C. Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission;

and perform miscellaneous duties to include clerical and other tasks as needed to become a certified Police Officer. Duties may include work to be done inside buildings, as well as outside, in a wide variety of environmental conditions. The Police – BLET Trainee is an in‑training position for someone who has not met the minimum training and academic requirements established by the N.C. Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission as a fully qualified or certified Police Officer.

The Police – BLET Trainees are not qualified by law to make arrests until they have met all minimum requirements to become a certified Police Officer.

Upon successful completion of the BLET program, the applicant will be sworn in as a Police Officer and perform general duty law enforcement work to protect life and property in the City of Goldsboro. The incumbent must exercise proper judgment, initiative, and calm control when performing duties. Problems that are more difficult are normally carried out under the direction of, or in conjunction with, a Police Corporal or Police Sergeant assigned to the same shift.

Work involves frequent public contact requiring tact, firmness, and decisiveness. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy, and state and federal law, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Police Corporal and Sergeant and is evaluated through observation, discussion, and review of reports for adherence to laws, department procedures, and proper judgment.

Essential Functions

Attend a Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy program, participating in and passing all required classes. During training, the Police – BLET Trainee develops awareness and understanding of the functions and responsibilities of Police Officers.

Academy training may include, but is not limited to
  • Classroom session on firearms familiarization and safety, as well as basic marksmanship;
  • Review of radio codes and applicable Penal Code sections.
  • Overview of the court system;
  • Writing and editing police reports;
  • Observing law enforcement activities such as maintenance of order, crime prevention, and protection of citizens and property;
  • Motor vehicle laws;
  • Elements of Criminal Law;
  • Constitutional Law developing and maintaining high level of physical fitness and successfully completing the Police Officer Physical Agility Test (POPAT);
  • Learning and demonstrating competence in arrest and control technique.
