Summary Objective
Hiring range is negotiable between $46,851 and $60,897 depending on a candidate's qualifications and experience.
The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of responsible semi‑skilled to skilled work in the field from helping with surveying, utility locating, and construction testing. Work will include using surveying tools to collect field data, making field notes of areas being surveyed to document activities, using the city’s ground penetrating radar (GPR) to locate underground utilities, and testing water and sewer mains according to the city’s standard specification manual.
Work will also include finding water meter boxes, sewer services if there is a clean‑out, and on rainy days the scanning of engineering documents. This job works under close supervision according to set procedures.
- Works in the field to conduct survey of areas; uses metal locator to find property corners, right of way markers or other survey markers.
- Helps with the 811 locates of water, sewer, and IT fiber for utility crews as requested; finds meter boxes and sewer clean‑outs if one is there.
- Under direct supervision inspects construction work in progress and completed projects for quality of work and adherence to approved plans and specifications.
- Conducts tests in the field; takes samples of materials for testing quality; deals with outside testing agencies.
- Prepares daily logs or other records of work accomplished.
- Performs worksite inspections for several works in progress daily.
- Attends training classes to increase knowledge and maintain any certifications.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques of public works and utility construction.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and specification and to compare them with various aspects of the construction in progress.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with contractors, developers, construction workers, the general public, and other employees; ability to exercise tact and firmness in the enforcement of requirements.
- Ability to plan and organize your own work and maintain the necessary records and reports.
- Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools.
- Ability to keep accurate records and maintain a sufficient inventory of materials.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, and the general public.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concise, both orally and in writing.
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience working in the construction or related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
- Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
- Bright/dim light;
Dusts and pollen. - Extreme heat and/or cold;
Wet or humid conditions. - Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
- Vibration;
Fumes and/or noxious odors. - Traffic;
Moving machinery.
